The School Bully Is My Brother

Troubled Brothers
A great book that kids can learn how to accept people who are different. That they can stand up to bullying,by standing together.Letting them know they wont tolerate them hurting other kids. Some times turning and walking away, takes more courage thanstanding and fighting. Teachers should have their class read and discuss the things in this book and their feelings when people teaseand bully them. This book would be a great teaching tool to use in class rooms.Debra H.

Very Fun Read with a Great Message
The School Bully Is My Brother was the first book I’ve read by Mike Bloemer. If I had to describe this book in one word I would have to go with funny. From the very beginning, when we meet the very eccentric family at breakfast to the feline spy in the English class.I think the book is cleverly written and definitely kid-friendly. The character development is spot on, not going too deep, but giving you enough to visualize each character accurately. I particularly like the characters’ names in the book also.Though the book was predictable, it had enough fun twists such as the grannies and uncle Jon to keep it more than interesting. My one criticism is also my biggest compliment…Weird, I know. I love the diversity of the characters in the book. I don’t know of many kid-friendly books that contain so much diversity: race, religion, age, and homosexuality. I was happily taken back by the uniqueness and boldness of the upfront diversity portrayed in the book, but here is my criticism comes in; most of these characters were introduced in the first chapter. Unfortunately, it seemed a bit forced to me.The School Bully Is My Brother is a book that I think most kids should read, possibly even in school. Overall, it has a great message, and the message is delivered in a fun and laugh out loud fashion.

What happens when your mom is dating the school bully's dad?
Harold O’Connell is a middle school boy with an enemy. His enemy is Shawn farmer, son of the Football coach and revealer that Harold peed his pants back in kindergarten, setting up a rivalry to last a lifetime. Shawn is also a mean kid who loves to pick on Harold. When Harold and Shawn find out their parents have been dating and Shawn’s father proposes to Harold’s mother, their world comes crashing down. The boys hatch a dastardly plan to stop the upcoming nuptials and to break up the lovebirds for good. But throughout all the planning, the boys start to notice that they like to spend time together and that the other is not so bad after all.I really loved this book. I liked the characters and their development throughout the book. They were all unique, no cookie cutter stereotypes here. There was humor, embarrassment, tears, and joy. There was much drama as well which can be expected with the plot. Still a great book with a deeper message.

Light and entertaining
The School Bully Is My Brother by Mike Bloemer is yet another one of those entertaining books I've read that is hard to forget because it just simply makes me you feel engaged from start to finish. At first I thought it was kind of a heavy book to read because of the title and since bullying is such a difficult and challenging issue we face these days, but I was surprised to find out that it was actually a light read. Our main characters Harold O’Connell and Shawn Farmer are both entertaining characters. I loved their dialogues and how they were able to come up with their scheme in order to prevent the wedding of their parents from happening and how their friendship blossomed from being enemies at school. Basically the book gives a light-hearted feel and it kind of reminds me of my childhood experiences. It has a youthful air in it.Plus, the writing style was excellent. It was easy to read and it wasn't boring. It made me want to learn more about how Harold and Shawn's family revolve and how they do their normal things at home. You know you are enjoying the book when you felt satisfied all in all. It was a great, amazing read.

A cute and funny look at middle school life!
This book will probably remind you of specific movies you have seen, where two kids work together to keep their parents from getting married. This one is from two young boy’s points of view, which makes it pretty unique. The humor in this one is good, and even an adult can appreciate it. It is great for kids around the ages the book is talking about, and there is plenty to enjoy. The characters are written well, even the minor characters, so you are able to picture them and shake your head at some of the things that they do. Ultimately, there is a moral or lesson to this story, which is another reason it is great for your children to read. Get this one for a preteen that is interested in reading or just read it yourself. It will make you laugh a time or two, regardless of your age.

A nice story for the teenage minds
I enjoy a light reading and when it includes topics such as bullying and stuff, well, you can see it never gets olds, mainly because it is still happening. I got invested in the story pretty quickly. Perhaps the reason for that is that the plot is not that new.Despite that, the story does have original elements that make the story unique. It is an ode to diversity as the brunch includes a Jew and a Pakistani Muslim. On top of that, it has the humorous narration of Harold, the main character of the story. At this point, you already know this but Harold's mom and his forever school bully's father, Coach Farmer, he loses it but what ensues later is actually pretty original and interesting. If you have middle- or hs- kids, this is one book I'm sure they'll enjoy. I enjoyed it myself and would recommend it with no hesitation.
