hi there, the fabric doesn't smell like suede but it has the suede texture on one side.

Can it be machine washed?

Absolutely YES. This stuff cleans up great in a washing machine. Had a couch for over 15 years now and it still looks new because I take it apart and wash it often. Do not dry it in a dryer except on low heat .
