It it a natural leather without dye. I use a leather mink oil on mine which gives it a almost dark brown appearance, but out of the box it is a light natural leather tan. I think you can keep the light if you use a different type of oil but I have never tried. The last pair was my second pair and I really like the look and feel of the boot.

Private cobler will charge you about $100.00. I just had it done. My sole is now .05 inch taller and the western cowboy heel went to 2.15 inches.. These boots look unbelievable. I wore them once since having the work done and people approaching me commenting or asking where i got them....the secret is make sure your cobler is Olde school, Europe. I wore them with a dark Harris Tweed jacket , black 505 Levi's with a black turtle neck
