It is hard to say "I love it! " to a book that disturbs
It is hard to say "I love it!" to a book that disturbs, engages, inspires, and provokes quite as much as the poetry here. Ms Shange takes you where it's real, and my first exposure to her was in a college production of "For Colored Girls..." starring a very young Angela Bassett. Then, and now, it's a journey that isn't always comfortable but it is worthwhile. Being white, I also feel a little voyeuristic reading some of the poems-- experiences that connect to firsthand stories I've heard but I cannot claim to share. There were some particularly raw verses that made me put the book down, take a deep breath, walk around the room, or make a cup of tea. But I always came back and will be coming back as it sits by where I sit.
