''THE DUKE'' HERE IS FORD-LESS; AND FINE, IN THE 40's!
This film has sure taken a lot bad raps for being a total flop then and since then, and for a lot of unknown reasons. As one of John Wayne's biggest fans, having grown up with an uncountable viewings of most of his films, I cannot understand how this one can miss; a HUGE EPIC for RKO at the time in TECHNICOLOR, it is MORE SO of your typical JW film generally speaking, than any of the comparable titles he made in that particular era.(OK-EXCEPT HIS WESTERNS-MADE FADING OUT OF THE DECADE OF THE 'ford-19fortie's'- . It has all of the ingredients needed in constructing one of the typical in formulas/patterns needed for future J.W. / B.O. punching to be used after this. II find this to be a VERY entertaining saga of ROMANCE and ADVENTURE WITH the building of a railroad the main story backdrop for neat romance amidst a whole lot of varied characters taking place in the South America of 1947. Oh, sure, it's HOLLYWOOD STUFF here, and quite engaging , although it might be a tad overlong at 129 minutes. INCLUDES A TECHNICOLOR WARNER BROS. MUSICAL SHORT SUBJECT and an M-G-M COLOR CARTOON, which is really a NICE thing to add to the CLASSIC FEATURE from the same yesteryear. EXCELLENT PRODUCT AND SERVICE!

Rare John Wayne movie.
This John Wayne movie is one many people have never seen as it rarely shows up on television/cable/satellite. This early Wayne film takes place in South America where he is the construction foreman building a railroad over the mountains. This story is more about romance and conflicting emotions rather than the usual "shoot'em" up western action film we usually associate with John Wayne. I found this to be a good film, good story and an essential addition to any John Wayne collection!

John Wayne at his best
I took a chance with my purchase of Tycoon and I have to say i was thoroughly impressed. John Wayne is superb and Laraine Day is gorgeous as the woman with whom John Wayne falls in love with. Sir Cedric Hardwicke plays Laraine's father who is evil manipulative and controlling. He played the role so well I found myself hating him. This is truly a great movie and John Wayne shows he can play a role other then a cowboy.

This dvd was bad
The dvd only played for a short time and then started breaking up and stopping. I took the disc out and cleaned it but it still wouldn't play. I need to find a way to send it back.
