A must have for all drummers
Steve Jordan is definitely one of my favorite drummers and this is one of my favorite drum dvd’s. He gives you some of his most famous grooves and he talks about music and features interviews with some great musicians and some great jams to listen to.

Steve "Gedwa" Jordan = The Money Groove
Steve Jordan has been a musician's musician since the 1970's.......coming up in the streets of NYC playing funk & fusion and then coming into our living rooms every night during the week as a member of The David Lettermen Band. This DVD shows Steve's passion for playing for the music. He graciuosly demonstrates various grooves he came up with on records by David Sanborn, Sheryl Crow & The Pretenders with special guests Bernie Worrell & Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar. This is a lesson that needs to be watched again & again & again & again. Thank you Steve for showing us how it's done by a true legend.

Pretty good dvd not for everyone though
Pretty good dvd it highlight what a drummer should look for in themselves. The dvd could be longer but I think the length set itself apart from other dvd. As it doesn't hold your hand, telling you what to do exactly. I wouldn't recommend this to a beginner since I think this is something a intermediate drummer would get. To be honest I think steve jordan use this dvd as a excuse to play with legends :D.

Great philosophy, no technique.
Steve Jordan shows you how he creates a vibe and has several a-list musicians talk about what they want in a drummer. No technique, just wisdom. Perfect for the drummer who is looking at trying to do some studio work. Very cool. Very insightful.

Steve's Education to ALL!
Okay, I have to say this. I like everything that Steve has done. Especially with Keith Richards! He does have CLASSIC performance and profile in what he does. Kind of like Stewart Copeland. Please let me hear your thoughts! Thanks, GREG

Jordan -- Master of the Pocket Groove
Steve Jordan has been a force in the world of session drumming and producing going back to the 70's, and his vast knowledge really comes through on this DVD. However, individuals should be warned that this DVD favors more of a PHILOSOPHICAL approach to drummers and drumming rather than a highly TECHNICAL approach. The DVD is replete with interviews and jam sessions featuring a fairly wide variety of musicians, including Keith Richards, Bernie Worrell (Parliament), and Levon Helm (The Band). They address such topics as the drummer's place in the band--especially their place in the rhythm section; the best way to play drums to compliment the song; and the best way to find a pocket groove and stay there.Steve does give a lot of examples of some of the beats he's played over the years, but he doesn't really break them down piece by piece form a technical standpoint. He basically just says, "Here's what I did for Cheryl Crow" and plays it. And while this practice does prove to be insightful at times, about half of the beats he chooses to illustrate are fairly simple ones, and you could really figure them out by just listening to the record without purchasing the DVD. (This is why this DVD gets 4 stars instead of 5, in my opinion.)

gift for drummer
at first hubby wasn't sure about this one but later into the disk he found some new beats to experiment with. Its mostly pop though and more for new drummers. Experienced drummers may find it a bit to fundamental

Groooovetastic
This is a fantastic instructional DVD for all drummers whether you are starting to pick up sticks or a full time pro! Steve Jordan has successfully made THE DVD that focuses on just groove, pocket playing, and how to play with other musicians solidly. He makes his viewers SO aware of groove. The reason for buying this DVD was because I wanted to learn how to develop my groove even further and boy has it worked! I also have the DVDs by Jojo Mayer, Tommy Igoe, Steve Smith, and Thomas Lang which are great for building a technique BUT doesn't do what this DVD does do: How to be a musician - why drummers are so important, why we play music today, and how to make music sound great. This therefore improves the viewers' ear, feel, and musical awareness long term when playing in a band. The feature is just over an hour long, so very short for a tuition DVD, but is nonetheless an enjoyable watch.During the film, Steve demonstrates his favourite grooves (about 7 of them, each for about 2 minutes) on tracks he has recorded with Sheryl Crow, Boz Scaggs, and David Sanborn for example. He plays the groove solidly, no frills or strings, just groove and throws a couple of fills in here and there. Does this define groove? I think so!As a session drummer, he switches between vintage and modern kits in the film for different sounds to fit the groove. This should open the viewers' awareness for designing and choosing the correct sound for a chosen styles. He also jams (Chicago shuffle, New Orleans funk to name two) with a few legendary musicians which is a pleasure to watch and listen to!Steve demonstrates in a nutshell how to play to a click, giving an example how to 'bury' the click, with some good advice attached too.Throughout the DVD there are some real inspiring interviews and quotes as well as Steve talking about his approach and passion for drums which all can really open up anyone's mind on how to groove better. The viewer can understand more on beat placement, connectivity in groove, ghost and grace notes, and balance/changing of volume between the limbs. This is something that Steve doesn't directly teach, but the ears of any drummer will open up to the importance of these aspects when watching.Steve also, intriguingly through the use of a timpano, demonstrates the importance of note values - holding/cutting off notes for as long/short as they should be played will improve an ear for groove.Overall a really great fun, but informative watch. The only downside is that more on 'session playing' could have been added such as how he listens to the drumless track and how he then comes about creating THE groove/chart for that song...but that's my opinion.I also recommend that bassists should pick this DVD up too! Their understanding of a drummer's work, groove, and the importance of a bassist will improve immensely.Real great DVD Steve, you're now a big influence on my playing. Thanks. Steve Jordan - King of the Grooves..
