Hi SMMJ, Great Question. The first year on the stamp is 2016. It is an eleven year stamp - the last year is 2027. There are dials or wheel you turn to change the bands/DATE and the stamp prints the date in MMM DD YYYY format. Example would be JAN 01 2020. The message stamps in BLUE ink and the Date stamps in RED ink. What I really like about this stamp - you don't get ink on your fingers when you change the date - there is a black casing around the bands to protect your fingers from touching the inked bands. This stamp comes with the individual message stamps that you have to change out every time you want to change your msg. If only the date is stamping on your paper, maybe you do not have a msg stamp currently on your stamp.
