Q: Since the protractor is not see through, how should I use it to line up the base line for measuring the angle?

You need to establish a baseline or reference line first. Just draw a straight line (to the length you need) using a ruler or any straight edge. Next determine where you want your angle to begin. Your protractor has a small hole at the center of the flat side - set this hole at the place you want the angle to begin and align the outer ends of the protractor (zero and 180 degree) with your reference line. Make a mark (pen or pencil) at the center hole. If you go straight up from there you will see the 90 degree indication, make a second mark at that position. Next draw a straight line (with a ruler or the flat side of the protractor) from the center hole mark on your reference line up to the 90 degree indication. You now have a line exactly 90 degrees to your reference line. Need a 45 degree angle to the right...again determine your starting point (along your reference line) and mark it, then lay the protractor so the center hole is directly over that mark and the straight edge of the protractor is parallel to your reference line. Count 45 degrees up from the 180 degree position (or down from the 90 degree position) and mark the 45 degree position. Now draw a straight line from your starting point to the 45 degree position and you have a line to the right at 45 degrees from your baseline. The trick is to always use the center hole as a starting point (where the angle you need intersects your baseline (reference line), and you can't go wrong. Cheers.

Q: Does anyone know the thickness of these pieces...? Do they have a cork backing..?

The metal is about a 1/32" thick. They do have a cork baking and with that added they are 1/16". They are very strong you have to bend them pretty hard to get any flex in the pieces.
