beautifully written
This was the first verse novel I’ve read, it blew me away, engaging, profound, deeply emotional, you know how it’s going to end and yet you keep hoping you’re wrong right up to the last page. A beautiful piece of literature.

Surprised this book is not spoken of more
A solemn, gloomy story about a young Jewish artist growing up in Berlin at the time of the Holocaust. Given that backdrop, the reader should be prepared for the seemingly innumerable accounts of hardship and devastation. The book explores themes of love, home and family stressed during the chaotic times of WWII.To explore these themes and the enigmatic protagonist, David Foenkinos uses an inventive writing style that quickly oscillates from past to future, from one perspective to another. Profound thoughts are wrapped in brevity:That is why Alfred throws himself into song: to survive. The way you might throw yourself into water in order to die.Or to describe Charlotte's grandfather's bossiness:He is like the general of a ghost army.Or:She reads the letter again. He might be hiding between the commas.Charlotte lived a life that perpetually asked the question, is it "Life or Theater?" This theme and life marches on in the excellent story telling hands of David Foenkinos.

A decent read.
The author takes an unusual yet true story ...or is it...of a female artist and creates a vivid memorial to her angst.

Beautifully written, like a poem
I thought I was buying a Kindle book but it turned out that I had to read it on my computer in what is called a Kindle Cloud Reader. I would have enjoyed it more if it was on my Kindle but I do recommend it. Besides the lovely writing (or perhaps I should say the translation, since the original must be in French) the story itself is heartrending.

Praise for Charlotte
A very moving novel. Teaches us a lot about human frailty, mental problems of those highly talented, but also about history of the period of the Second World War in central Europe. I will keep it on my shelves for frequent rereads.

A sad but beautiful book written in a unique poetic-prose style.
A heart-wrenching deeply disturbing but beautifully written book about a young woman artist who shouldn't have died so young, killed by Nazis during WWII.

Great book! Highly recommend this read!
Book arrived quick and in good condition. This book was a great read about the life of Charlotte Solomon told by David Foenkinos who does a great job repainting Charlottes short lived life. Charlottes family tragedy, social injustice, and matters of the heart are brought to light in a very interesting format. This book has led me on to Charlottes original piece, Life? Or theater? I would recommend his book! Great read, great buy.

Excellence!
Utterly fascinating and original. Such a true, humble, authentic, and fitting tribute to an artist I feel like I know personally after reading this.
