They are great for a thick stiff leather. It takes some finesse with softer supple leather

Q: How are these used? Just press it down on the leather? And if so how much pressure and for how long?

Dampen (“case”) the leather with clean water and sponge. When leather returns to its natural color, it is ready to stamp. If stamping a name, center the letters in the middle of the space. Hold the tool firmly at a 90 degree angle (so that the stamp is flat on the leather) and strike sharply once with a mallet. It also helps to practice on scrap leather before moving on to your design.
