WARLOCK BY JIM STARLIN GALLERY EDITION

The 16 "lost in a taxicab" pages are here, sort of...
Haven't read this collection in this form, yet. I'm familiar with the work as it (a random back issue of Warlock #11) got me back into buying comics back in the day and had me searching for the remainder of his story, even trading more valuable (and desired) issues of The Uncanny X-Men to get all the missing pieces. Claremont/Byrne was still on the title (X-Men) to give an idea how long ago this was. I like the size and apparent sturdiness of this volume, and was happy to find the unfinished Warlock #16 via photocopies included here (repro is a little/lot rough). I'd have bought it sooner just for that, just out of curiosity. It's not essential to the main stories though. Just an inventory tale with Warlock and some elves or some variation of "Little People." Some of the notes below are hard to read. Also a few pages of B&W repros of the the original art. Also a nice touch. All in all, a nice collection that doesn't include the infinity stuff I don't care about, nor the pre-Starlin issues which apparently informs part of the next GotG film. Looking forward to that, but doubt the comics hold up since I wasn't crazy about them in the first place. Will these hold up? I dunno yet. Nice to have on one of my larger shelves.

Big and Beautiful
Big and beautiful book with fun stories and excellent artwork. Jim Starlin knew what he was doing when he wrote and drew these issues.

The Adam Warlock - Jim Starlin Collection for the Ages!
Somewhere between Star Trek, Shakespeare and the Bible, Jim Starlin's Adam Warlock story arc illuminated my young consciousness in the late 1970s and taught me to search for eternity's truth... within.... without... wherever it may lie. I already own the original comics compiled in this collection. I bought them at the comics shop as they trickled onto those revolving racks every other month! I subsequently purchased the paperback compilation to preserve the sanctity of those original comics whenever I was struck by the urge to reread these magnificently mind bending stories. But today, the ultimate hardcover publication of these peerless interstellar works arrived on my doorstep in startlingly vivid enlarged living color. I can't imagine a greater gift to the kid I once was and apparently still am.Just beautiful. Thank you so much!

A beautiful representation
This is a run whose Art is worthy of a gallery sized reproduction. The art and the colors are at their best with this collection. Hopefully they make more.

Nice book, but damaged
Beautiful book, shipping should pack better, the book was damaged, the book was on the bottom under the padding?? Why have a lot of padding in a big box and put the book on the bottom?? Probably a careless attitude.

How can the savior save himself?
While Jim Starlin had already honed his skills at the cosmic epic in the pages of CAPTAIN MARVEL, a series he essentially saved from the grave of cancellation, it's WARLOCK that takes his personal focus & talent to a new level. Adapting a secondary character whose potential had never been realized, Starlin gave readers a different sort of cosmic epic, one that was as much about inner space as outer space, exploring psychology & religion & archetypal figures while still providing an entertaining, thrilling story. That story? Adam Warlock, the messiah wandering space in search of purpose, finds one in the quest to overthrow the Universal Church of Truth, led by the Magus—who is Warlock himself, or at least his own dark Shadow. Accompanied by Pip the Troll, who provides comic relief but also much more than that, he sets himself against an empire that rules hundreds of worlds.Interestingly, for all of the cosmic aspects of the story, which unfold with dazzling speed through Starlin's art & narrative, this is very much a character study & is deeply personal—not just for Warlock, but also for Starlin. He would return to the themes first explored in depth here in later work such as DREADSTAR. But there's a certain intensity here, perhaps from this being his first chance to really dig into those themes. You'll notice that I'm not giving too many specifics about the plot. That's because many will be coming to WARLOCK retroactively, due to Starlin's creations & concepts being used in recent Marvel movies. Let them discover Starlin's original work without spoilers.Artwise, this gallery edition is a delight. The oversized pages reveal little details that I hadn't caught when reading the original comics decades ago. They also gain in energy & appreciation of overall page design in this format. While not every classic comic series requires such treatment, this one benefits from it. And this is definitely a classic comic series, not to be missed!

Beautiful book!
First off it arrived in perfect condition but doesn’t come with a dust jacket. It’s larger than an Omnibus but not as thick. A great collection of vintage Warlock! Recommend!

Absolutely Fantastic!
In 1975 when I was 14 I bought Strange Tales 178 because of the cover art. It was the most precise piece of comic book art I had ever seen (and I read a lot of comic books). I still have the run of Warlock/Magus/Thanos comic books from back then AND I have the paperback version but I gave in and got this one as well. So glad I did. Many reviewers are seeing the larger artwork as an issue but personally I really like it. Jim Starlin himself would have drawn these on paper twice the size of this so it gives an insight into how he saw the pages during concept stages. Even supplying some sketches at the back of the book too. It's a hard back and very nicely put together. All stories from Strange Tales 178 to the finale with Spiderman, The Avengers and Captain Mar-Vell are included. My only criticism is really my fault. I have no book shelf space large enough for this. I can live with that. Absolutely Fantastic! Thank you Jim Starlin for writing the best part of my childhood.

Great material... too oversized edition
The material reprinted in this book is history of American Popular comics...However the edition might be... too big? The printing is perfect, well restored colors, not too bright or saturated... but maybe this comic does not really need to be printed that big.The art and narrative are great, but they do not benefit from big size... as an art book, this might work, but I have noticed that if you really try to read the comic, not only admire it, the text in the captions is way too large to be comfortable to read, it slows you down and somehow breaks the flow.Beautiful art and edition, but if you want to read it, look for regular sized HC or TBP
