Mr Midshipman Fury

A throwback to earlier types of adventure yarn
This ia a tale of daring-do -- in the tradition where sailors and officers don't swear, the officers address the men as "lads", one Englishman is worth (at least) two frenchmen or other foreigners and everyone is brave and competent. Although it starts with a prologue involving rotten officers and a mutiny, the adventures of Mr Fury himself do not reflect a world where only the iron fist of discipline deals may deal with a basically unjust system. Character subtlety is not a priority; adventure is -- and it is very well done. Mr Fury's startling leadership talents in a fight -- not to mention the astonishing number of opponents he runs through -- is told in sraight forward fashion, and at least his exploits have not been cribbed whlesale from the astonishing real-life adventures of Lord Cochrane. This is not O'Brien or Cornwell on warfare in the Napoleonic era. Instead, lads, it is good escape literature. I, for one enjoyed it, and will get the next in the series for times when pure light escape literature is wanted.

Spellbinding story of a very smart and courageous professional
I chose this as a follow on to "Midshipman Fury." Another superb read! I am most anxious urge next volume. I look forward to the next volume and the official recognition and fair rewards for at least some of Mr. Fury' s amazing accomplishments. Bravo!

Worth reading
This book does not rise to the level of the Aubrey-Maturin or Hornblower series, or even the Lord Ramage series. Nonetheless, it is enjoyable and fun to read.

Mr. Midshipman Fury
A very enjoyable book with quite accurate facts. The story moves in good fashion and I was impressed! I am still reading the follow-up!

A surprise
I enjoyed this novel. The prologue set a different stage than I expected, but the segue into the hero's character and its development was very well done. I heartily recommend this book for lovers of nautical fiction.

Great Book
Great read. Any fan of O'Brien or Kent would enjoy this book. Fast paced and exciting, I wish there was a 3rd book.

Waste of money.
Made mistake and bouth both of the books. Too many nautical and story mistakes between both of them. Not worth reading.

A great rollicking adventure !
I wasn’t sure what “rollicking” meant, when used in reviews of “Mr Midshipman Fury”, but it is a very apt description. This is a fast paced adventure following the exploits of a young Midshipman, as he grows into an experienced seafarer during his voyages. Naval fiction sometimes gets depressingly bogged down in the tales of young innocents being abused by evil shipmates or clueless, chinless, witless, vindictive, incompetent officers. This is a breath of fresh air, as we follow John Fury from an uncertain future in Portsmouth to doing battle with the elements and those pesky French in the Indian Ocean, and watching as he goes from a drifting boy to being a flint-eyed seafarer. Treat yourself to a “rollick”, and more please G.S. Beard !

Well written, well paced read
First time I have read this author his attention to detail is excellent. The character, Fury, is well developed. A good read and a great way to escape to 18th Century Navy life

Good sailing detail but.....
Generally good storytelling and characters consistent with the navy I guess. However disappointed it rather petered out at the end. What happened to the Magicienne? What about the Mornington and reward or prize money. But good enough for me to buy the next I. Series
