This is what a good tablet looks like
I bought the first generation iPad. Big, clumsy, slow, and pretty much a large phone without the phone functionality. I vowed never to waste 3-400 quid on something so instantly obsolete. Recently I found myself wishing for a tablet sized screen with a simple operating system, I don't need it to try and be my phone, I have £1000 phone that does ok thank you very much. I just want to watch TV on a bigger screen and a few bits and bobs. Enter the Fire HD. Price - check, size - check, functionality - check.I took the plunge taking advantage of the Black Friday discounts and was very happy with the result.Let's be honest it's just a big screen and some apps, but that's all I want. I don't need it to be my main technology link, the centre of my tech life, I just need a simple screen that I can watch TV on and do a few bits conveniently. The device is well made, looks good, has a great screen resolution, and you can if required tweak and fettle it to suit your needs which are probably different to mine. I can't fault it. So far nothing has produced a wry smile and a shrug ahh well moment, it does everything I need it to do, but it does it easily with no immersive research session on how to make it do the most simple thing.I don't need Alexa, switched off easily no complaint. I don't need children's apps, maps, home device control, word processing, etc. etc. I just need a simple screen and a few bits.So if you need a simple tablet to compliment the tech you already own with paying the best part of 4-500 quid because its loaded with stuff you will never use this is the tablet for you.I like the fact it's linked to my amazon account, I like the fact it doesn't try to bully me into buying services, it just waves them in front of me and respects my not interested response. I'm happy with that. The price is keen, the product is good, If you need a cheap, no make that good value tablet that has the level of sophistication that makes it easy to use and painless to maintain, this is your tablet right here.Very happy, highly recommended. Apple would do well to realise there is a market for a cheap screen with apps, we have already paid a lot for all the other stuff.

Bigger actually fan be better!
As a long time Kindle owner, I started with an HD6 which I still have and use all the time. (For travelling, it's size and capabilities still can't be beaten). I moved on to an HD8, which is an excellent machine and does pretty much everything I want, hard to fault really. However. When I saw the black Friday deals on this HD10, I decided that it was worth a look.I wasn't expecting it to be that much better than my "8" but, I'm delighted to say I was wrong! The screen is excellent. Both bright and clear, watching video and films is much better. Somehow, the colour and contrast seems more vivid. For reading, the extra size of the screen makes type even clearer, (especially for an old suffer like me!) and the option to have two pages in view at one time could be useful to some but personally, I'm not a fan.For gaming, there's not much difference to me, except physical size however, I suspect some games will benefit from "game mode" if they are graphics heavy. As far as sound is concerned, the built in speakers are perfectly adequate, no better or worse than my "8" . However, the stereo effect of the sound is slightly better due to the extra distance between the speakers, but really a good pair of headphones still can't be beaten.Battery-life is just what I've come to expect averaging nicely over 8hrs mixed use, I've never really had issues there. One vast improvement though is the charging. With the supplied USB/C lead, I find it charges much more quickly than earlier versions which is nice.Overall, I think this is a cracking piece of kit. Not as easily portable as my "8" and, frankly not even close to my faithful "6" ! But then I don't think they're meant to compete. The screen on the "6" is, quite honestly, the best I've had, even after 7yrs of hard work! This, is the first Kindle since then to come close to matching it. I won't be using it in the same way as my "6", and it DEFINITELY won't replace it, but I think the "8"'s going to be first reserve for home use from now on.Would I recommend this to a friend? Yes, I would AND be confident of keeping that friend. Worth the money? ABSOLUTELY and at Black Friday price you really can't to wrong! If you've reached this point in my novel, well done and thank-you for your perseverance! Great yourself to a hot beverage of your choice and but one of these. I think you may like it.

5* but only if you buy it on promotion
Honestly worth every penny if you buy it on promotion. At full price it's probably 3 and a half.I purchased this for my 6 year old at half price so I've based the review on that. It's lightweight and well built. Feels a lot better quality than similar priced chinese tablets on here.Screen quality is outstanding. For less than £60 you're not going to get any better in a new device. By comparison it would cost more for a replacement iPad screen than it would to buy this tablet again.Speakers are loud enough to fill her room and alexa sounds very clear.Performance is excellent. For web browsing and streaming you shouldn't have any problems. Fire OS however feels and looks outdated like the android version it's based on.It runs FireOS so you're technically limited to amazon's app store. It's definitely behind the Apple and Google stores in terms of content but you can find all the major apps. You do however have the option to sideload apps on it.I found Kids mode was too restrictive for her. It's also quite long to configure. Other companies handle this a lot better.Battery life is great. Surviving a 5hr road trip with a combination of games and streaming use. Netlfix runs PIP mode too allowing multitasking. Charging however is quite slow, even slower if the tablet is in use too.Overall Amazon have created an outstanding product. It's pretty much unrivalled at it's promotional price point. And with a few tweaks it can do pretty much everything.
