Good find
The patterns are well written. The history of hats, while brief is interesting. I purchased it for the patterns

YES, This is the Ultimate Hat Book!
Vogue Knitting has done it again. They said this is an ultimate hat book and that is what it appears to be.There is a short history of the knitted hat, a description of the anatomy of a hat, a section on types of hats, and a section on basic techniques. Then, of course, come the patterns and they are lovely. The very first pattern in the book caught my eye. It's called 'Bowler' and is knit with Lopi fiber. It is in two colors - Wine and gray. I love it. The Beanie is my kind of hat. It has a spiraling lace pattern and is knit in a dark magenta with Eden Silk Yarn. I lived in Alaska for 44 years and the Watch Cap is the perfect hat for cold, cold climates. It has a foldover and has a cable and blossom pattern. The yarn is Blackstone Tweed by Berrocco. 'Tuque' is one of the prettiest hats I've ever seen. It's Fair Isle in bright lovely colors, knit with Ambrosia Yarn. Vogues describes it as "English roses and ivy meander around the crown of Sheila Jayne's chic topper. Stitched in the round from the corrugated rib band up, this is a terrific first Fair Isle project for an otherwise experienced knitter." The 'Cabled Helmet' is very 1940's and chic in that WWII style. 'The Traveling Vines Beret' is another beautiful hat that I want to knit. It is knit with Noro Yarn and has the variegated hues that Noro is famous for. It is a beret that folds over in the back and is very stylish. The patterns go on and on and there is something for everyone in this book. I can't imagine a knitter opening this book and not finding a hat to fall in love with. The last section is on embellishments so if you want to liven any pattern up, this section tells you how to do it.

Great reference book. Ordered new and received a new book though 👎🏽
The media could not be loaded. Got this book as part of my collection to understand designing hats and have some great examples to reference. The only books I don’t have from bought knitting is the shawl 1 & 2. I am really looking forward to being able to reference this book. I hate it when people provide reviews without providing the table of content. See photos. I really like this book because it shows you methods that will help you create a brim for your hat. And it also provides the history, anatomy, and types of hats. This book is specific in comparison to the vogue knitting ultimate guide. Both are a great tool but having a patter that shows how a knit designer maintained the structure of the hat is what I was looking for. Another added bonus is that there is an embellishment section (last chapter that goes into more detail for the embellishments within the applicable pattern including templates of the size for a visor, or creating a pompon, tassels and bead knitting. Vogue knitting is a wonderful addition because it also provides helpful information and resources for material as part of the final pages of the book.Book condition:Absolutely upset that I paid more for a book that was to be new when I got a used book. I included the price printed on the inside of the book. The book itself seems to be in perfect condition, but the book has sticky residue on the bottom of the book cover which tells me that the book is used. It is also torn on the back side of the cover. Not a happy camper that I paid for a new book and didn’t get what I ordered.

worth every penny
I don't often write reviews. Mainly because I am of that generation brought up to keep quiet :0) Also a book has to be something pretty special for me to sing it's praises. Well I think this one is. The bit about history and techniques is short enough to be helpful and worth reading but not so lengthy that it's boring. There is quite a variety of hats - but you can see that from the 'look inside' facility. I'm a young nearly 60 year old so my taste is that of a 60's flower power child who aged a bit :0) I intend to knit a fair few of the hats for me - because I love hats and there aren't many I wouldn't knit. My favourite is the bowler - which I just knitted. I felted it this morning and I'm really happy with it. I didn't use the Lopi that the book suggests because I think it's expensive and harder to find in the UK. It can be found if you are desperate to knit it in the wool used in the book - ebay and one seller I found. But I did it in Wash +Filz It which has worked perfectly. I would guess any 100% wool would work. The only one I really hate is The Stocking Cap - I just think it looks silly, but that's my taste. All the hats are rated for difficulty - the bowler is an easy one. All abbreviations are at the back of the book which might mean a bit of flipping to and fro if you're new to knitting. There is a resources list but only for the US and Canada. Would American craft book writers please note that you will sell more books if you remember to provide for your foreign would be buyers! All in all I'd say I'm glad I bought it. I'm also glad I shopped around and found it cheapest on Amazon.USA - even with slightly dearer shipping.

Everything went fine
The book arrived well packaged, in pristine condition, and even earlier than first promised.

Aptly named
I knit a lot of hats. They are small enough to hold my attention, are appreciated as gifts, rarely have seams, and allow you to try different techniques out without a lot of time investment. However, I am by no means a hat expert. With its sections on history, hat anatomy, hat types, and techniques, this book may change that. It is very informative without being dry or boring. The patterns section is very large. There are 50 patterns encompassing varying techniques, styles, and levels of difficulty. There really is something for everyone in this book. The book is beautiful and features multiple pictures of each hat.

Un incontournable
Ce livre est une excellente base pour étudier toutes les formes et les différents types de constructions de couvre chefs, en anglais , mais sans complications majeures si on a un lexique de base fiable.

Many hat styles to choose from
I'm very happy with the selection of hats to knit in this book. There's a brief history of knitted hats comparing then and now versions. Next is covered the anatomy of a hat from bands to cuffs to visors and earflaps. There is a two page layout showing 14 drawings of the types of hats. This I found really helpful because they all have proper names, i.e., beret, cloche, bucket, watch cap, etc. Most of the styles are popular today. Techniques of construction are covered and then we get to the patterns. There are 50 of them so there's lots to choose from. Of course there are repeats of the styles. For instance there are many beret hats but they are all different - one of then being the cover photo. I really like the majority of them and plan to make many of them. Some favourites are a gray felted bowler with a red band, The English rose Fair Isle ivy toque is gorgeous made with blues purple and green. There's a really nice gray hood that extends so that it has a scarf - a classy look done in moss stitch. The Diamand cable aviator hat is done in white - it's lovely complete with earflaps (a must for cold Canadian winters). There are many beanie hats that are really lovely. And there's a stunning brioche slouch hat. The stitches used are vines, Fair Isle, cable, etc., etc. There's even a couple hats with applique. I think everyone is bound to find a several hats in this book that they will want to make. Happy knitting.

Nice all round hat book for experienced knitters
I've ordered loads from this book, including the hat on the cover. It contains a very wide range of hats in contemporary, wearable styles (mostly) but there are some jester, Andy Pandy and eccentric styles - about 25%. The book is well illustrated and its nice to see all the categories of hats and the history of knitting. Not the best book for knitting on the go, as its hardback.

My Boshi kann einpacken !

Amazing book
I first saw this book in the local library and decided I would buy it for myself because there are a good assortment of styles of hats. Some look to be more challenging than others but I intend to work my way through all of them.
