Rose & Thistle: English and Scottish Music from The Christmas Revels

I grew up listening to the Christmas Revels, particularly their A Celebration of the Winter Solstice on vinyl, and was overjoyed to find other albums by them on mp3. Other reviewers have noted the unevenness of the singing. While that is certainly true, it should be noted that most recording are of live performances, which include not only rigorous singing, but dancing as well. If anything, it's refreshing to hear carols sung as they should be, with breathless abandon and joy. However, if you're looking for an auto-tuned, Mariah Carey-esque Christmas album, the Christmas Revels are probably not for you.Rose and Thistle is unusual. There were some songs I didn't recognize. While some buyers may be perturbed by that, I found it nice to hear Christmas songs I hadn't heard before, and would like to think that my ancestors were familiar with them. I particularly enjoyed the medley of Scottish reels. So put on this album when the weather is frightful, heat up some Wassail and pretend you're in the Highlands.

This music was a delightful, fresh change from the much-overplayed popular Christmas music of the last 60 years. We enjoyed it so much!

This is not your traditional Christmas CD with all of the songs you remember from your childhood. It is traditional English and Scottish songs from the past. Those who appreciate this type of music will love this CD. The Rose & Thistle is highly recommended. I would suggest that you listen to the excerpts from this CD before purchasing, if you are unfamiliar with the song titles.

Enjoyed the seasonal flare of Christmas music by the Scots! I never get tired of listening to it no matter the season!

This was a feast for the ears. It's simply delightful and a must-have for any tasteful Christmas music collection. Highly recommended.

This was one collection of low key, sombre, depressing music. Don't know at all where the word "Revels" comes in, there is nothing remotely like a Revel here. Great if you want to tone down your Holidays though. Wish I never bought it!

Very entertaining and a change from other Christmas CD's. I would buy it again for a gift.Enjoyable. Nice addition to a collection.
