Not for watercolor
I hoped I could tilt the canvas area back to paint at an angle. The water bucket holder is actually a Velcro strap. Took a while to set up up, also.

Sturdy. Built clever and economically
Sturdy. Built clever and economically. Took me a little time to really see how it works but it's great.

Works + lightweight but holder kinda easy to slip: comparing 2 metal easels
Cool easel and lots lighter than my wooden plein air easel, for sure. I like it. But since I recently checked out and reviewed another metal plein air easel too, I'll give you a comparison review in case you want just one.- I know I'll continue to get good use out of both of them in my workshops I attend or teach, art therapy coaching sessions for seniors through kids, (since I use multiple at once sometimes.) Plus for my outdoor painting adventures. Or just to paint with my mom. My mom and I already used both to test them out. She got a kick out of painting using this one, a "real" large artists easel yesterday. And I used the other the other day.- This one's nice, it just doesn't have quite as many cool new bells and whistles as the other metal plein air easel I recently reviewed for y'all. - They gave this easel a cool name for sure, marked in just a tiny sticker on the easel itself (unlike that other metal plein air easel) plus on the carrying bag nicely (it's emblazoned huge on the other easel's bag)- the plastic bag containing everything doesn't smell like petroleum like the other did bad š- the "helps make it nicely giftable" recloseable outer box I'm keeping to hold a nice huge piece(s) of rolled fancy artist paper- the easel is nice and lightweight metal (the others is too but appears sturdier)- The carrying bag is nice quality like the other one's. This one has an extra pocket on the outside, a cool touch. The zipper works well and opens larger than that of the other easel. Sturdy enough. Shoulder strap.- the part of the easel that holds up your canvas is separate and hangs on with the screwy things on the easel. Like the other easel's I've had with this feature, it slips off pretty easily. The other metal easel I recently reviewed has 2 sturdier, built in canvas holders. This easels holder could display tinier substrates, I suppose. But the others method makes it easier to move your whole painting and easel together if you need to, especially with the extra handle this one doesn't have. It held on to the wood board I used to attach my mom's gouache paper to, but slipped once. It also must be removed of course for you to fold the easel back up and you can attach it with the nylon and Velcro strap to hold it to the easel for storage in your bag.- This came with written instructions in the box, unlike the other. This easel is simpler though so I could easily work it without them.-. The top part that holds the canvas works the same as the other holding-your-substrate wise. But this one doesn't have the cool crank mechanism like the other for heightening or shrinking your substrate area.- no built-in level like the other has- bottom of feet don't move around on this one to help if you're on uneven ground, like the other's do- expands nice and small for table or tall, like the other- This one doesn't have a hook to hold a sand bag or other ballast to help support it in the wind, unlike the other easel.I hope this helps you! Happy šØ arting all!

Useful but could be easier to assemble and sturdier
I was torn between giving this easel 3 or 4 stars. It's not as rackety and flimsy as the last metal easel I had, and that's obviously good. I find it clunkier to put together, but it's doable. The back leg doesn't go back as far as I'm used to with other easels, and making it lower doesn't give the same position. While I think this easel would be good for someone who plans to use it mostly indoors, and plans to fold it up when not on use to save space, I think it's not sturdy or heavy enough to use in the breezy outdoors. This easel certainly takes up less space than my large wooden box easel, and while my box easel is much sturdier, and I prefer the position it holds my paper, the floor easel has a large footprint that doesn't work with my small space. While this easel is an improvement over my non-steady metal folding easel, I think I'll get a wooden folding easel and pass this one to one of my artist friends who could use it.
