Otter - Messer Mercator Brass Large Carbon

Very nice knife, I was impressed with it overall
Very nice knife, I was impressed with it overall, it has a very nice fit and finish, though the brass is coated in a thin plastic varnish to prevent tarnishing. I just steel wooled it off, I prefer a little patina on my brass. The blade is excellent, takes a very sharp edge and holds it rather well. Once I got it razor sharp I found that I only have to touch it up on a leather strop to restore the edge. It is a great low profile knife, sits in my front pocket without printing or getting in the way like many knives I have owned. I may try the original version as well.

Solid and sharp
This is a true pocket knife. It's large enough to use for a number of things and yet flat enough to disappear in your pocket. It is not a bulky knife but it has a full sized hand grip. I have a friend, an Alaskan bush pilot who has packed one of these knives around for many years. It's a great camp knife and the steel is easy to keep sharp.

A Work of Art
There is a reason this knife has been around for 150 years. It is a work of art. It's not fast, it's not tactical, and there are no bells and whistles. It is, however, a shaving sharp, practical work horse of a knife. This is my first carbon steel blade pocket knife and I am a convert. I don't think I'll look at stainless the same way, no matter how good it is. The carbon steel will need a little more love, in terms of keeping the blade oiled to prevent rust. Overall, that is a small price to pay for a FAR superior performing steel. There is something to be aware of if you purchase this knife - there is a light layer of clear coat over the brass handle. I personally want the handle to patina with use, so I took a rag with some acetone on it and removed the clear coat. I am not a fan of forcing patina, I feel the piece should earn it. That being said, I will update this review and add some photos once it has a suitable patina look to it.

beautiful. sharp. great edc.
It's a beautiful knife and arrived sharp enough shave with. No complaints here.I'd definitely recommend this knife to others, especially since there don't seem to be very many brass knives out there. All the other ones I found were much more expensive and don't really come form knife companies.Although I've just had it a week or so, I can see why so many people continue to buy them. It's also super thin, so it fits in the pocket perfectly (don't even notice it) which is rare for such a large knife.

Love this knife
Had a “regular” black version of this knife for years that I’ve loved and that has held up to a ton.I wanted another one in brass that would patina over time. This one is sturdy and gorgeous.

If you're on the fence, just buy it.
This knife is exactly what I was looking for. Brass handles, carbon steel blade, thin but durable design. Like another reviewer said, there's a reason it has been around for over 150 years.

A nice knife but costs too much for what it is
I'll start by saying that I like this knife; it's super lightweight, and it's nice in the hand. I use it as a general pocket knife, mostly for opening packages, etc. However, it does have some drawbacks. I think if the price was lower these things wouldn't bother me as much.1. The blade does not hold its edge very well at all. Under moderate use, I have to sharpen it every day.2. The blade stains easily. The first time I used it was to cut some sausage while eating at a BBQ joint, and the blade became discolored immediately (it turned black for some reason); it would not clean up. Many things will discolor it, and stuff like packing glue or adhesive is very difficult to remove. It seems to me like the plating on the blade is very sub-par.3. The brass will tarnish and discolor immediately. Don't even try to keep it looking nice. If you order this knife, expect it to wear, aesthetically. That said, I still like the knife; I just wish it were 25.00 instead of 50.00...

Get the bronze version
Sharp enough to shave out of the box. Still holding up 6 months down the road. I've gotten 2 one for ne one for my brother and they are beautiful knives. I recomend getting g the bronze as it ages nicely and I have a friend who got the black one and voiced strong regrets after I showed him mine. Attached photos are from about 6 months of daily carry
