Purchased as a gift for my son (tree surgeon) he's delighted with it, so I guess that's good?

I love the figure of 8 as it is so simple to use. The main thing for me is that you can take it as a backup descender/belay, and attach it to ropes without needing the thread a rope through it. You just insert a bite and flip it over the small ring.Also it doesn't care what size rope you use. (Within reason of course)I tried it recently for abseiling from 20 feet and it works perfectly. However if you use it as a locking device when ascending, is it VERY stiff to get the rope through and needs a strong tug.There are much better things to ascend with but nothing I know of as quick and simple and versatile as a Figure8 for descending. The Kong Slyde and other belays are much smaller, but need to be threaded and are restricted to 9-10 mm line.In a really serious emergency you could use 2 carabiners locked together to create a figure 8, but for the price of this one it's not worth messing around. It should be in any climbers kit.
