The Evil Dead: 40th Anniversary Edition

The movie with JUST enough extra.
Weβve seen the movie, so we know the story. But the glimpse into Ashβs thoughts and the short flashes of backstory made this book a great companion and a good lesson to other creatives tasked with adapting works with cult followings - leave the source intact and maybe just expand a bit. Hardcore fans are upset when the fundamentals of the thing they love are changed. If you donβt know the movies, then watch and enjoy the insanity.

Groovy Graphic Novel
Iβm going to preface this by saying Iβm a full blown deadite and I love and try to get my hands on anything Evil Dead. Now, with that out of the way, hereβs an honest review. First Iβd like to say that the paintings are incredible! The story mostly follows the plot of the first film with a little bit extra here and there (i.e. what happened to Scott when he left the cabin, what Cheryl was going through locked in the cellar, etc.). It was pretty well written and obviously wasnβt a shot-for-shot, line-by-line sort of thing. Now on to a few of my gripes. The big obvious bit that really was annoying was the lack of actor/actress likeness. The only actorβs likeness they really have is Bruce Campbell and the rest just look nothing like their film counterparts. Same goes for the clothes, I understand this was made in 2008, but I donβt think anyone really expected to see Linda, Cheryl, or Shelly in low rise jeans and shirts that reveal their midsections, itβs the most early 2000s fashion they could have used lol. My last gripe is that itβs missing some of the good classic lines (βParty down!β and βYeah, truly amazing.β are just two off the top of my head). Overall, Iβd recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the films and wants to see an interesting take on the classic.

Groovy idea, but meh overall
If you're an Evil Dead fan and a collector, then this is for you! But overall it's a meh graphic novel overall. The art is amazing in it without a doubt, but it's a more 2008 modern twist to the first film. With some extra scenes which are interesting, but not really missing much if you pass on it

feels like an expanded cut of the first Evil Dead film
This is a short four issue mini-series recounting the events of the first Evil Dead film. I really loved the art style, which had that photo-realistic, painted look to it. Only the character of Ash resembled the original actor (Bruce Campbell), with characters like Scott, Shelly or even Linda looking like brand-new characters. The whole story is told in a flashback, with Ash recounting the events & providing sarcastic commentary throughout. The last issue ends just like the recap at the beginning of Evil Dead 2, with a hint that Ash's torment is not quite over. This captured the mood of Sam Raimi's original, with the additions of more character moments (little revelations like that it was Scotty who introduced Linda to Ash) and more emphasis on personal relationships (the mini series gives more weight to Ash & Linda's relationship, for example). So, if you loved Evil Dead, and just wanted to experience it again but in a different way, this mini-series is the way to go. Definitely recommended!

High Ratings Howw??
I love the Evil Dead movies, and I expected something different here. But all I got was half-hearted photo-images copy paste from the movie with a line of dialogue somewhere. I purely bought because of the love for the movies, but it feels like a huge letdown. How does this book have such a high rating? And delivery βThe book has scratches left right and centre. It however smells new lol. But edges are torn and so much scratches are there.
