I tried as best I could to kick it in and was rewarded with boot marks and a trip to HD to get a solid wood door. Any unwelcomed intruder would need a some serious tools to get in. Will this work on a interior door frame which is not 1 3/4"?

No too wide..will work on 1 3/4 but not on 1 3/8. Not unless you trim the door stop
