Very Real Issues
Cross-posted on Tween Book BlogWhy I picked it up: Raina Telgemeier is another one of those authors that I will read anything she writes forever. Why I finished it: Telgemeier has a unique ability to take sensitive subjects and situations and create stories about how we can muster the courage to take the next step forward and recover from our own shortcomings. Ghosts deals with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that can cause a buildup of mucus in the lungs which can lead to other serious respiratory problems. Telgemeier takes us inside the lives of these two fictional sisters to explore the very real issues that individuals and families with loved ones batting cystic fibrosis must be aware of on a constant basis. It's a struggle for Cat to have to share her life with her sister, but she has also taken on the role of protector which perhaps prevents her from having to deal with her own fears. The festival of Dìa de lost Muertos that the town participates in each year (and is celebrated worldwide, usually around the same time as Halloween) helps Cat begin to put some perspective about how we celebrate life and how to live her life to the fullest. She knows Maya's cystic fibrosis will only get worse as she gets older, and at one point Maya asks her parents why she shouldn't make the most of the time she has now while things aren't too bad. Death is a weighty subject to be sure, but Telgemeier seems to arrange the notion in a context that is perhaps not so scary and foreboding to the reader. Thanks to the softness of her art style and the wonderful colors by Lamb, the story still has a lighthearted, wholesome feel to it - like having a conversation with a close friend. Ghosts is a story about how we connect with our family both in life and in death, and how they can give us the courage to keep going when the odds are against us.

Best book EVER
ok, so this book is so completely different than the other books. I am not saying I dont like it...I love it!! I am 11 years old and I purchased this book on my kindle on Dec 27 , 2017 And I have got to say.....This book is amazing! It talks about a girl named Catherine or Cat (the way she likes to call it) and her sister , Maya. Maya does have cystic fibrosis and sadly there is no cure. They moved to a place called Bahia Fe Luna (I speak spanish) to help her with her breathing. Although, They have many adventures and they meet a boy named Carlos. Cattherine thinks he is trying to scare them about ghosts. But later in the book, they find out that ghosts are real on the day of the dead. I don't exactly like the part , however where Catherine starts to scream at Carlos accusing him for having Maya's cystic fibrosis get worse because of the ghosts Calros showed them. I thought that part was a little bit too much of drama....but anyways the rest of the book is pleasent and very loving. My favorite part of the book is when Catherine meets thatt old lady at the halloween party who she thinks is her grandmother. This part shows love and kindness because Catherine gives juice and love to that old lady who Catherine doesnt even know. Even if that old lady is a ghost, Catherine got used to it and gave love to almost everyone in the book. Also this book is very simalar to Sisters because Catherine and Maya get along and Catherine tries to help Maya feel better. Since there is no cure for Maya 's cystic fibrosis .....she keeps thinking about dying. That part makes me feel sad for Maya. Until when a little kid ghost (Carlos 's uncle) talks with Maya about how it is like to be a ghost. The part that leaves kind of a cliffhanger is the part when the cat at the end of the book looks like he/she cooks the food. I really want to know who that cat is and what did it do. I think The cat is the grandmother.Overall...I definetely recommend this book to all readers of any age! Amazing book Raina Telemeiger!! :)

A Great Book!
The story has a very uplifting message while dealing with a tough topic. Catrina's sister, Maya, has an illness that gives her a lot of the attention. This book teaches you to live in the present, Maya stays very positive through her sickness, even though the future might be rough. It's a story of family, friends, childhood, and illness, put together in a great way. The book also had a good educational value! It digs into The Day of The Dead, a Mexican holiday, traditions and beliefs. Even though the book appears to might have some "scary" content, it is very welcoming to everyone. Very fun, engaging, easy to read, and with fantastic illustrations, this book is a great pick!
