Karen's Organic Just Peas

I really enjoyed these dehydrated peas. I was pleasantly surprised at how good these tasted. They were gone way too soon. They were a wondering snack for at my desk and a nice pick-me-up. Not only that, but I felt utterly virtuous eating a vegetable as a snack.

I started buying Karen's mixed vegetables on Amazon in September 2018 to supplement freeze-dried backpacking dinners. This works out great but I'm horrified to note that the price has tripled (3X) in the last 3 years. It works out cheaper to buy direct from Karen's Naturals if you order more than $50 worth so you can avoid the shipping cost that otherwise kills the deal. Then the price has only doubled in the past 3 years. I may go back to buying frozen vegetables and dehydrating them myself.

A neighbor friend said her picky eater eats these and I decided to give it a try. My boys ate them, didn't make a yuck face, or make a sparky comment. Point for mom !

I was just buying by the tiny picture of the package, and only saw one large bag and clicked on that one. When I got it I saw that it had that terrifying little "HOT" hiding on it! I hate spicy things, and was very sad to realize that I'd gotten the wrong one. Thankfully it wasn't super hot this batch (I've had other batches of the jalapeno ones that I accidentally grabbed that I literally couldn't eat), so I was able to eat it reasonably well. But I really wish they'd make the different flavors, and sizes, very obvious on the packaging. Otherwise, I love this stuff! I'm a raw vegan and freeze dried snacks really satisfy my need for crunchy things without me spending a long time dehydrating stuff. I believe the nutrients are more preserved in the freeze drying process than the dehydrator process, too.

My kids got addicted to freeze dried fruit as a snack, so I thought I'd try adding freeze dried veggies to the mix. These peas are pretty good. They taste like...dried peas. Since the name of the product is "Just Peas," this is a good thing, not a bad thing; there's nothing added to these, not even salt. I mindlessly munched on some as a snack; my kids were less thrilled with these than they were with freeze dried fruit, but they did eat a few.At one point I decided to make my grandmother's empanadas, which ask for peas, and was halfway through prepping them when I realized I had no more frozen peas in the kitchen. I knew most freeze dried food rehydrates well, and although this particular package markets itself as an as-is snack, not a rehydratable product, I threw a cup of Just Peas in a bowl, added two cups of warm water, and waited for about half an hour. To my surprise, they rehydrated very well! I poured off the extra water and tried one--it tasted almost exactly like a microwaved-steamed pea, and in the empanada recipe, you couldn't tell the difference at all. They're a tad pricey for being just peas, but they're a lot more versatile than a bag of frozen peas, so I'll likely buy more in the future, perhaps for our next family camping trip.

I've started mixing this in with my parrots' pellets every day, and they seem to love it. I regularly see one bird has made vegetable soup in his water dish, which isn't directly next to his food dish so he is deliberately dragging the veggies over to hydrate them. We give them fresh chop pretty regularly but this is a nice convenient way to keep vegetables in their food dish all the time, so it's expected that vegetables are always part of meal times!I like the subscribe and save so I don't have to think about re ordering. It just comes and I just keep mixing it in with the pellets.

The flavor is great! The hot variety was too hot for me but you might like it. Good quality control and packaging.I liked the peas and I cannot stand them normally. Each vegetable tasted like it was supposed to. Great product. I thought the price was too high for sustained use but great for trail snacking and adding to soups or stews when cooking remotely. 😊
