Required equipment
It rocks. Smooth compression without being overbearing. Very nice addition. Required equipment for my acoustic guitar rig.

Black Finger
I have purchased my Black Finger Electro-Harmonix one month ago. I own a Keeley compressor and before played with Milk Box - DOD and BOSS CS-3. My initial idea to buy the Black Finger was to have a second compressor, in case I have a friend to play with me at home. Actually I didn't expect something better than my Keeley 4 knob compressor that sounds perfectly. My first impression about Black Finger was awful. It seemed to me noisy, difficult to use, low sustain and bad compression. Then I decided to go through it and with some accurate setting I obtained really a great sound. By the time being, Black finger is in my favorite pedal and my Keeley is in the cupboard. This Pedal is a mixture of Booster, valve preamp and Compressor. It doesn't have big sustain but it enhances a lot the strat type sound. However, I couldn't get a good sound when I used it with SG and Les Paul. I have 3 Fender Stratocaster, 1 telecaster and 1 thinline. With all of them Black Finger was extraordinary. If I lose it I will by a new one immediately.

very versatile
A very versatile pedal with potential to be a lot of different things for a lot of different people. You can get a heavy compression for a strong, driving bass line or a lighter, warmer compression for tapping and slapping. It's easy to overdrive and sounds good when it does. I've also used it while recording, and it does a good job of it. Much better than the stock protools compression usually used in garage recordings. The downside would be the learning curve. I spent many hours playing to learn how to reliably configure it, and while it was a fun few hours, it might seem like a difficult task for a beginner. I'd recommend some cheaper solid-state compressors with less settings for people who want something simpler to set up.

Not unless you have a huge pedal board.
It's just too big. The proprietary power supply ended up being a huge pain.
