Tales of Hoffmann by E. T. A. Hoffmann - Paperback

An excellent selection
Some of the best of the many 'tales'. The first of these was used by Hindemith for his opera 'Cardillac', the story of the goldsmith who couldn't bear to part with his creations, and resorted to murder to get them back. Other tales were used by Offenbach. I can't say how good the translation is, not having read these in the original, but the style is a little strange. I wonder how near to the original it is.

Mystery tales
Good translation of these unusual tales. They need to be more widely known to a younger readership.

Bad conditions
The book arrived in bad repair, with a messy cover. It’s the first time it happens with Amazon, and it’s quite an expensive book

favourite stories
Loved his stories as a teenager, read them in the original. Not sure about the translation. The stories themselves are wonderful, though. Shame they're not known much outside the German speaking countries.
