Not only is this book full of useful information for anyone that lives in or owns and loves an old home, but it is also an enjoyable read.My daughter and I just purchased a 200+ year old home because when we laid eyes on it we connected with it. When we saw it we felt we were finally home. Not only because it is beautiful, but because this house has heart ans soul and loves to have a family love her. If you resonate with that, this book is for you!

This has helped me identify the approximate age of my home. Much of the original character has been stripped out over the years, so this gives me an idea of where to start with renovation and restoration.

I just bought my first old house and am waiting to close on it right now. In the meantime I am reading this book and already feel more prepared to care for the house and am not as intimidated by its differences from the modern homes I am accustomed to. The prose is lovely and it is a wonderful breakdown of how one should approach such a treasure.

Another good reference, unfortunately didn't address my concerns. Couldn't make time to return, so kept it.

This is the best book that I have come accross about retoring one's historic home. I'm not a contractor, so I'm not going to perform the work myself but, I do want to know about the history of the house and how to locate that information. He gives you sites to explore in your local community that will help with that endevor. A must have in any library to know more about the history of your house and what is important in perserving your house or any structure that you are trying to preserrve.

I bought this book thinking it was going to be the ideal book on the restoration of my old homested, but found it didn't cover as much as I thought it would. It goes into so many different directions when explaining something that you kind of lose your place. There are a few really good parts and others are so so. The photos are hand drawn and so small at times you really can't seem to figure them out. The author really does know what he is doing, but needs to be more direct in his approach and show more detailed and easy to follow directions. Overall I rate this book as OK.

Thought it would be more informative and almost purchased an alternative book on restoring old houses, so a little disappointed.
