At the end of the 13th century, the sword ruled supreme as the primary weapon of Knights and Men-At-Arms. However, with the introduction of steel plate armor, the popularity of the sword as a battlefield weapon began to wane. You see, the problem was the sword couldn't cut or crush steel plate and had to be specially designed for use only as a thrusting weapon if it was to have even a chance at piercing plate armor. Enter the War Hammer- an ideal weapon for use against an opponent who is encased in plate steel. The heavy hammer head could crush the strongest helmet or suit of plate armor with just a few blows and the back spike could rip through helm and plate like a modern can opener and the top spine will stab through the persons heart! In battle, the hammer side was usually employed first to knock down and stun an enemy. The head is drop forged out of iron with a heavy toothed head. The handle of our War Hammer has been designed to be equally tough. Made of natural brown wood, the handle extends an enormous 21 1/4 inch long it provides tremendous leverage so enormously powerful blows may be struck. We have also added a 2 1/4 inch spike cap at the end of the handle, helping to protect the soldier from all attacks. At the top of the head is a 3 1/2 inch spike, enabling the wielder to use this hammer as a thrusting weapon. Looks like it should be behind glass in a museum! This weapon was very effective against full armor. This fully functions war hammer will be the jewel of your Medieval Collection. *Please note that due to the carbon steel construction of this handmade sword, there may be slight imperfections including some rusting on this item. This rust is easily removable and should not deter from the long term value of this item. Further rusting can be avoided by proper maintenance of the blade.

ROTTEN SHAFT
Out of the box this is a beautiful and well designed piece. What really excited me, however, were the numerous reviews attesting the functionality and sturdiness of the weapon. Eager to test this myself, I started small—a light cautious swing into a miniature coconut. The head sunk in effortlessly. I was impressed, until I realized that the handle had fared about as well as the coconut. This was probably just a fluke and bad luck on my part. I can't get too mad about it since the head and butt spike are the important parts, and they seem pretty bomb proof. It'll be easy to mount them onto something sturdier.

Well Constructed - nice appearance
This item is undersold if anything in my opinion. The construction is rugged, solid with thick metal components securely attached to the dark wood handle. The flanges used to attach the head to the shaft are a full 1/8 of an inch thick and looks to be bolted through 4 times. The edges of the metal are sharp, but not so much that you would be concerned with slicing a finger. It looks better in person than the pictures presented on the web site. My handle came heavily varnished with some scars and indentations: nothing significant enough to create structural integrity problems, but such that it looks like it has been ruggedly used. Overall, the hammer has enough flourishes/decorations to look good. It looks like it belongs in a history museum more than an art museum. All surfaces of the wood - including the scars - are well varnished so that it is all sealed and single color. The wood has been beveled to match the octagonal shape of the cap on the bottom but left square to match the shape of the head at the top. It is a nice touch - the bevel starts just over 4 inches from the bottom of the head - so most of the handle is beveled and in my opinion fits better in the hand because if it.Parents - this is definitely not a toy for children. I would be concerned about younger - and even quite a few older - children using this unsupervised. It can do serious damage.I would recommend this to a friend. The price was excellent for the quality.

Serious man toy
Kids thought it was a cool relic piece. After receiving it, it stays out of their reach. Not good for settling sibling disputes. It also inspires hoodlum thoughts in grown ups.

Warped shaft
My wife bought me a pair of these a few months before my birthday and had them stashed in the house. When I opened them, one had a bent shaft. Company refused an exchange because "I had them too long". The one that is straight seems to be of good quality, but I won't be doing business with them again. I understand their position, but the bent shaft was not caused by improper storage or whatnot, or they both would have been warped.

The Swiss got this one right!
This piece could pass as a museum replica. The hammer points are solid and historically correct, as are the spikes both top and bottom. They are affixed to the handle in a very rugged manner that looks as if it could hold up under quite a bit of punishment. The handle itself is weathered quality wood and possesses imperfections...which makes it look as a personally used item. In my opinion, this is the MOST impressive war-hammer on the market for even double the price!

Fun for about 5 minutes.
The hammer itself is quality that's why it's getting 2 stars not 1, but a few wacks caused the handle to break. Also the spike at the bottom and the spike on top were a little loose ut the hammer was solid. I was hitting a rotten tree and a few coconuts and a watermelon and it snapped near the head. I was not expecting super high quality but the handle is made from a cheap wood and must have had some defects in it to break so easily. I would not use this for anything more then a shelf decoration let alone a reenactment or sport.

GREAT WAR HAMMER
I like it. Good Windlass quality. Head is pinned to handle in two places. Head was hand polished and had no inclusions. As the manufacturer states, the head is made of iron, not steel. It may not handle striking a hard surface. I only plan to display my war hammer along with my war axe, viking shield and viking sword.

Beautiful replica War Hammer.
Amazed on how great this War Hammer looks and is made. We used this in a feature film "Red Forrest" (currently on Amazon Prime free stream). Amazed at the quality build and it is by no means cheaply made. I still have this from the set and keep in on my wall as a decoration.

Not the best quality
Although the value isn't terrible, the item itself is not crafted well, and the head came in rather loose on the shaft. If you are good with fixing/modifying the item yourself, then this could be recommended, as both the head and shaft are sturdy enough on their own, but otherwise, not so much.
