HI Susan, this is a men's bodystyle tee shirt. You will find that it is more boxy than a woman's cut shirt. A large would work or an XL if you want it to be loose fitting.

Are these heavy duty cotton t-shirts? (Like Gilden or something similar). Or are the soft cotton?

What is the cotton weight? 5.3 oz maybe? Like a Beefy-T or something?

I'm not fully certain of the weight, but just by holding it, the cotton weight is fairly average. It certainly doesn't feel beefy to me. Hope that helps.
