Will this work with paper thicker than tracing paper?

Yes I trace on 140 pound watercolor paper.

This may sound silly, but can you plug it into the wall or does it need to be plugged into a computer?

What is the difference between this model and the one that sells for $3 less? I see that this one has a scale on it. Is that all?

It has a ruler to help you place your drawings such as; centering from top to bottom and middle page.

How do you adjust the brightness?

By holding down the power symbol in the upper left corner of the item, you will adjust the brightness/dimming of the light and press on the symbol once to turn on or off
