When it comes to fitness equipment, there's little that works your whole body better. To stay on the ball - you're forced to engage all your muscles, which builds strength and improves stability. A workout with an exercise ball can be a beneficial way to help improve muscle tone and balance. Exercises are easier on a softer ball, and you may have less difficulty maintaining your balance. A fully inflated fitness ball should be quite firm and require you to fully engage your muscles to stay upright. Sizes based upon height are approximate. If you are near a division, you could opt to go either way. Consider your other body characteristics and how you plan to use the ball. Choose a ball that fits your height. If you are 5 feet or shorter (152.4 cm), you will want a ball that is 18 inches (45 cm). If you are 5 feet 1 inch (155 cm) to 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm), try a 22 inch (55 cm) ball. Get a 26 inch ball (65 cm) if you are between 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm) and 6 feet 1 inch (185 cm). If you are 6 feet 2 inches (187 cm) or taller, you will need a ball that measures 30 inches (75 cm). Choose a larger ball if you have back problems, long legs, or for stretching and yoga exercises. Get a 26 inch (65 cm) ball if you plan to use it in place of an office chair and your desk height is between 29 and 30 inches (74 to 76 cm). Because the ball will deflate when you sit on it, choose a ball that has a diameter which is 4 inches (10 cm) larger than the height of the chair you are replacing. How to Air up an Exercise Ball? 1. Note the ball's intended final diameter (exercise ball sizes are always measured in centimeters) 2. Place a large box the same distance away from a bare wall as the ball's intended diameter 3. Lay the deflated exercise ball out flat between the box and the wall 4. When the ball brushes against both the wall and the box you positioned near it, you know it's properly inflated.
