The Chosen: Season 1 - DVD

The production of the entire series of all four seasons and the single Christmas episode between seasons Two and Three up through 2024 is well mounted and visually appealing, very engaging, entertaining and intriguing.. It is a portrait worthy of a Warner Brothers DC Comics tale set in an alternative parallel universe. If you are expecting fidelity to the actual character of Jesus and the historical realities presented in the Gospels and the Bible and archaeology as a whole, you will be disappointed, even put off by this series. What Dallas Jenkins and the writers of this series have done is present a new Jesus. When this Jesus changes water into wine, he dismisses the servants and does it in private, alone, no one really knowing what happened. The Sermon on the Mount here is not a representative example of his teaching in all the synagogues of Galilee and Judea as in the Gospel of Matthew, where he is constantly followed around by hundreds of people all the time who need no invitation. This Jesus has his small group of followers issue and post written invitations to the public to attend a unique public address by someone they have heard about, and he asks Matthew for suggestions and help in organizing the ideas in the upcoming Sermon. The Gadarene/Gerasene demoniac in this universe is inhabited by one demon claiming to be one of legions of demons in general. And Jesus runs toward the demoniac to cast it out, the demoniac does not run toward Jesus to attack Jesus. And there is no herd of 2,000 swine that become possessed and suddenly run off a cliff and drown in the sea. Never happens There is no Transfiguration on the Mount. Never happens. And no address in the synagogue in Capernaum telling the people and his disciples that he is the bread of life, and that they must actually eat his flesh and drink his blood to have life within them, and when they take him literally, he does not deny it. Never happens. Nathanael does not find out about Jesus from Philip inviting him before they ever go to the wedding at Cana. The Nathanael of this universe first meets Jesus at the wedding at Cana because Nathanael and his sweetheart Ramah are the vintners who fail to provide enough wine for the guests. Lighting here in the houses and buildings in this first century universe is provided with paraffin wax candles, not pure olive oil in clay lamps with wicks. Ramah dies and Jesus refuses the request to bring her back to life, in direct contrast with what he did with the daughter of Jairus when Jairus asked him to come heal her and she died before they arrived at the house. The raising of the son of the widow at Nain never happens in this universe. "Go and tell John what you hear and see ... the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up ..." In our reality, Jesus raising the dead happened a lot. But not in this alternate universe, and not by this other Jesus. You get the idea. This series is strictly fictional entertainment, and it should be enjoyed as historical fiction entertainment only. Only those who do not know either the Bible or history will think this series is a faithful representation of Christ. When you have really read the Gospels, the contrast with this series is really striking. It's a beautiful piece of imaginative movie-making fiction. Just don't expect it to be the Bible or in any way to be historically accurate. It isn't. It isn't intended to be. Five Stars for Fictional material, professional quality acting, film direction and production values. If that's what you want it's worth purchasing. It's as entertaining as a Warner Brothers DC Comics live action movie.

Absolutely spectacular. What an amazing production. The actors are so incredible the roles seem to be embodied more than acted. Brilliantly produced - each and every detail of setting, back ground, and atmosphere woven into a stunning tapestry to hold all the stories beautifully. This one done with a true holistic eye to detail. Magnificent. Achingly beautifully.

I love the way this story is told about Jesus. The DVD was for my husband. He would have loved it. Sadly, he died the day before it arrived.

A great show that looks at the Jesus story through a new perspective (the eyes and experiences of his immediate followers). Heartwarming, inspiring and thought provoking. I can't wait to watch the rest of this series!

Fantastic, I thought the first episode was a bit slow but it picks up quickly from there A very moving and emotional experience. It brings the gospels to life. I think they did very well and it's worth getting the other seasons.

Firstly, the quality of the DVDs is excellent. Secondly, the production values are very good too. Each episode draws one in more and more into the character's personalities. There is a down-to-earth feel about the story. So often the story of Jesus seems over dramatised. Here we have an insight into the nitty gritty feel of that era. It feels real; perhaps this is the way it might have been. It is hard to not feel emotion as each episode unfolds. Highly recommended.
