Fantastic book. This is exactly what I needed
Fantastic book. This is exactly what I needed. Admittedly I have picked up random bits of German at various points throughout my life, but had very little formal study, I decided to give this a try, and couldn't recommend it more. It's simple in a good way. It talks through the various parts of a day, family life, etc. and the author goes out of his way to go over various ways of saying the same kind of thing. So learn various grammatical forms without poring over some boring chart (though the infrequent interspersed tables are quite useful). The pacing of introducing new material is perfect. And the best part of all is the free audio. Oh man.... Put on a chapter and read along. Repeat a few times if necessary and you'll have a pretty good understanding of everything being said. Then throw it on your iPod in the car while driving for review. I honestly would have paid twice the price for the audio. Seriously fantastic job, sir.

Wonderful Book!
Great great book! Thank you Brian Smith for writing the kind of book I've been searching for.I bought this book in order to get used to word structure of the German language. I listen to the audio files to improve my listening, which I love because I won't butcher the German language with my poor pronunciation. When I want to challenge myself, I cover the German side of the book and translate it to English (out loud)! This way I can improve my pronunciation and build some muscle memory in my mouth ;)

Very good book but kindle version not formatted properly
This is a very good book but I am Very disappointed in the formatting and page layout of the kindle version for iPad. The text is not side by side like in the book so the formatting needs to be fixed. I would give 5 stars otherwise.

German top 500 frequency words
The structure with the German text and the English next to each other is useful for seeing if you are understanding the meaning of the sentences. The sentences and grammar are repeated in a way that is useful but not boring so you can see how to use it in a direct sentence or past tense etc. The only complaint is the recording, even though it is useful the voice is slow and sounds a bit unnatural even robotic. But It does help with pronunciation.

Kindle version formatted just fine to me
I'm just writing this view to say that I found the Kindle version just fine. I nearly didn't purchase this book because another reviewer said not to buy the kindle version. I'm glad I tried it anyway. It's just fine to me. Remember you can always get the sample first to check it out, or you can just buy it and return the kindle book - I think you have 24 hrs (might be more)- and get a refund if you don't like it

Fantastic aide for beginners to reinforce and expand all your ...
Fantastic aide for beginners to reinforce and expand all your learning skills; vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening and speaking. The online audio can be downloaded to play on your mobile devices. The author, Brian Smith, also has written a series of similar books to help you continue growing as your skills improve! I highly recommend you give them a try.

Serves its purpose well
Core German vocabulary repeated over and over in various conjugations and declensions. The 'stories' aren't all that interesting, but you get a lot of very valuable practice.

A 100% Recommendation
I was initially disappointed with this book because of its blatant simplicity, but of course that is the whole point! Once the adult reader gets over the hurdle of what feels like a nursery book I found it deceptively compelling. The constant repetition of words and phrases makes full use of the differences and use of dative and accusative cases in particular, which seems to make an almost natural sense of proper syntax in simple German sentences. I have found that just reading a page at a time, interspersed with my other German studies is both refreshing and helpful, providing some reassurance as to moving forward with the language, especially for the independent learner where external support is lacking. An added bonus is that there is a free audio download of this book available from the author's web-site.However, I strongly advise NOT to buy the Kindle version, which is really awful, as the layout is really quite unacceptable and makes reading the text unnecessarily annoying and also disappointing. So, back to the printed copy, for its price and content I wholeheartedly recommend this book for the beginner of German

Solid introduction to German for absolute beginners.
I really like this book. I lost my original copy moving house so this is my second copy. I like to re-read it from time to time to keep my essential basic vocabulary in trim. The free audio recording of the book is excellent. I would advise true beginners to really take advantage of it. I wish the author would put out versions in other languages, too. There i a polyglot called Olly Richards who publishes graded readers in multiple languages. They are similarly impressive. He publishes the same stories just in different languages. Maybe Mr Smith could do the same. There are genuine benefits to reading a familiar story in the new language.

The best learn to read German as a beginner
Can't think of a better way to learn to read German as a beginner. I recommend re-reading chapters regularly to consolidate grammar and vocabulary. I found myself making impressive progress in a very gentle manner. I wish he would do one for French and Spanish, too.
