Q: will the large fit a 14-16 size ?

No it will not fit a 14-16 size.

Q: My son is 54 lbs and 44 inches tall. Based on your size chart he's in between a small and a medium. Which would be the ideal size I should purchase?

Medium Fits most children with height 50"-54" and waist 27"-30". Large Fits most children with height 56"-60" and waist 31"-34". Based on the size chart he falls between medium and Large.
