Can this tool drive a nail forward, from the head side of the nail, into or through a half inch board as well?

yes a finish nail with a head diameter that fits in the tube. Half inch board is no sweat.

Would it be possible to shorten the rod for use on thinner wood?

I don't see why not. Cut it, grind it or if you have a lathe, machine it down. Get a spare plunger in case you mess it up!

Can this work from the head end to remove previous deck nails?

No. The far end of the nail needs to be expelled into open space, like a trash can or your yard. :-)
