While making this album, Dave says, I saw no reason why nice harmonic changes could not be played by strings. I saw no reason why the string writing could not be a little more complicated than it usually is for albums of this type. And with the freedom Bob [Robert Mersey, the album s producer] gave me, I wrote and played exactly what I wanted. Mersey observes that with Dave s arrangements, the strings simply become an extension of the piano. In this album Grusin showed that he has a deft, sensitive touch, inventiveness and exceptionally good taste. Review: Wish he had even more pieces to listen to - I love Grusin's style and technique. early Grusin!
I liked the piano and strings approach with Dave. Way before GRP Records and arrangements for singers Jon Lucien, Buddy Greco, and a host of others, doing movie scores etc; he went the Peter Nero route with this album. Though he did not strike gold like Joe Harnell the music is not too pedestrian nor bombastic like Hugh Montenegro!

Boring and lacks emotion or energy. I'm a huge Dave Grusin fan, but this album is a disappointment.

Magnifique album de Dave Grusin à ses tout débuts (début des sixties). Cette alliance de soft ballads, d'orchestration sublimissime et planante aux violons, et de piano avec le toucher si délicat du bonhomme, un peu à la façon de symphonies pour piano mais façonnées avec des ballades de jazz. C'est aérien, tendre, séduisant, charmant et sophistiqué à son maximum, comme seuls certains artistes de cette période pouvait le faire (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Julie London, Jack Jones par exemple).

Another Blue Moon reissue of a fine early 1960s album. This album is all about arrangements and performance. Small group with orchestra. The music is familiar but the arrangements take you on a musical journey that makes each song a new experience. The sound transfers are so very clear that it could have been recorded yesterday. Includes original liner not and cover photo.
