Does the tape need to be purchased separately - or does it come with your first roll?

It comes with a roll of 1/2" x 10' black print on white labels. The rolls purchased afterwards in the 1/2" width are 23' long and last quite a bit longer than the first roll will last, especially if you calculate in the misprints during the learning curve!

Does it waste a lot of tape when printing? The "Brother PT1290" prints the label on a longer piece than necessary.

Yes! It definitely wastes a lot of label. It has a lead of 1/2 inch before and after each label, effectively wasting a full inch of blank label with every single print, and the labels look funny with all that extra white space, so you need to manually trim them down. Huge pain.

Considering purchasing the DYMO 160 hand held & extra tape but what is the difference between tape and tape cassette (45013 & 45113) which do I buy?

does it print 2 lines

Yes it will print 2 lines on the 1/2 in tape that comes with it. You have to use a smaller font (I think 8-12 pt is all it will let you use) but it does work!
