Ahhh, the simple pleasure of an elegant and sturdy design.
Can a kitchen waste can be secksy? Why, yes it can!I've been looking for a replacement kitchen trash can for quite some time and have been quite aggravated that the available designs are either too fussy or impractical for one reason or another.I never wanted to spend this much money on a waste can but I simply couldn't find a decent trash can in the lower price range. I'm also dead set against electronics to open a waste bin. What I require is a simple design that is sturdy, with a lid that will stay open when needed and with a design and structure that won't go defunct after a short time due to some type of cheap spring system or other design flaw not meant to last long.So I kept coming back to this can again and again before finally making the purchase. Although all our other trash cans in the past have opened from the wider side, I realized this design was a better fit for our kitchen layout. It is a nice option although they do have the same style trash can that opens from the wide side if you prefer. This can is visually appealing, well planned in the design and sturdy enough that I doubt I will need to replace it in my lifetime. So I was able to justify the higher price. We have a few other Simple Human products and they are all about quality and good design. They make special trash bags for their trash cans and send a free sample package with the trash can so that you can try them. Although they are indeed, high quality bags that fit like a glove, I will purchase the cheaper bags at the grocery store, there is a little hole in the trash can liner that you can simply tuck the excess wider opening of the cheaper bags into to get a snug fit.I also like that the bag fits onto a removable liner bin that you can easily take out and carry to the trash with you if you are afraid of your bag tearing or dripping liquid across the floor. It also makes clean-up of the inside much easier. The can opens with a light touch and closes nice and tight so that no foul odors leak into the room when the lid is shut. The lid is also easily opened with a knee or elbow or other body part if your hands are full with something messy. After a lifetime using all kinds of lower quality trash cans my husband and I were just a little giddy to have such a fine trash can and teased each other about how we were having so much fun throwing away things in the new trash bin. Things that just work well the way they are meant to make us stupidly happy. If you are in the market for high quality function and design, and can afford to pay for quality, I think anything in the Simple Human product line is a safe bet. We're very happy with this purchase.

Great can if dimensions, volume and appearance really matter!
My husband and I recently downsized into a condo - while the kitchen is really logical, it isn't overly large. The previous owner had put a small garbage can in a lower cabinet, but as a dedicated amateur chef, that wasn't going to cut it. Partially because it was entirely too small, partially because it was on the opposite side of the kitchen from where I would be doing any prep work, but mostly because I needed the cabinet space. So the only logical place to leave a garbage can was a pass-through from one end of the kitchen into the main living area. It's not a huge pass-through, so I needed a narrow can. If pressed, I could put it in the very large pantry, but I preferred to leave it out so I wouldn't be touching the pantry door with dirty hands. So I needed a tall garbage can that was narrow and attractive, since it was going to be visible from where we hung out most of the time. And I also wanted it to have a slim profile so I could tuck the garbage can out of the way in the pantry if we had company - a lid was necessary to keep smells in hand. While there was a part of me that still can't believe I paid this much for a garbage can, I don't regret the purchase one bit. This is a very sturdy, well-balanced can, but it is not overly heavy. I can easily drag it around the kitchen if I need it elsewhere, and while some people here don't like the stay-open lid, I prefer that. I leave the lid open while I'm cooking, and then I can close it when I'm done and my hands are clean. Also, with a good lid that is firmly set onto the frame, your pets won't easily be able to knock the lid off to get into the garbage. (Though I'm sure a smart pet could figure out how to work the touch bar ;) )I will say that the touch bar is nice, but if you have the can placed on a slick surface (so tile or linoleum) and it's not backstopped by a cabinet? Kneeing the touch bar will frequently just move the entire can instead of opening the lid. I'm sure this could be fixed by putting a small rug or a carpet-pad underneath, but I have yet to do that, since I move the can around quite a bit. It's a minor issue for me, the way I use the can, but something to consider if you know where you want to place the can.The lid is easy to lift off to replace the garbage bags/liners. You have to get the hang of placing the inner can on the interior supports to prop it up, but that's pretty easy. I also like how the inner can is easily removable for cleaning - much lighter and more flexible than the the entire can.The outer stainless steel can is fairly fingerprint resistant, but it's not a magical substance that repels all signs that a human ever touched it. But that being said, it wipes up really easily with whatever your preferred cleaner is.As others have noted, you don't have to use the simplehuman trash bags, which are a little more expensive. However I've chosen to use them (the "M" liner), and not just because they fit the can perfectly. We live in a building with a trash chute, and even when we super-stuff these bags (and they are pretty sturdy), they still easily fit in the trash chute. After seeing some of our neighbors struggle to fit their bags through the chute entry, we're happy to keep using these. They can be a little tight to fit and remove from the inner can, but you get the hang of that, too, and it does keep any food or other waste from getting in between the inner and outer can.So if you are a serious home cook and have a kitchen with a slender space for a trashcan? You really can't go wrong with this. I don't think I will ever need another trashcan - it is sturdy and attractive and is exactly what I needed for the smaller space I have.
