Exciting plot, likable characters.
This is one of Koontz's best thrillers. He revives his fascination with genetic tampering to create a truly frightening villain, but one for whom you almost feel sorry. The protagonists are a very likable family with a couple of great kids. The plot moves along at an almost excessive pace. There is never a dull moment. The ending is a bit predictable in that: "There's no other way out." but satisfying nevertheless. Read it; you'll like it.

Don't believe the hype!
I don't know why do many negative reviews are out there about this book! Written in 1993 Dean was ahead of his time. The plot is great, gets betters the story goes. Be ready for a tale of many twists and turns. It's amazing how he gets you inside the head of a murderer. Has you question your own morality as the story goes. A dynamic ending will keep you guessing at how it all unfolds. Superb read!

Another Great Book
Dean Koontz is my favorite author. In this book as in his others the characters are intriguing, and unpredictable. The evil characters are truly evil and the good characters inspiring. This book will hold your interest to the end and you will not be able to put it down.

Would be better as a Kindle single
I will put a book down if I don't like it. I'm an adult and I'm all done with assigned summer reading (of things I do not care for). I read purely for enjoyment. I almost put this book down on two occasions. The first was because I could have sworn I read it already, only to realize that it's like a lot of his other work. Seems like he just recylcled some of his other stories to meet a quota or something. I realized I hadn't read the book previously, so I went on, only to think the book was way too long, even for Dean Koontz standards. I realize Koontz will describe the way the wind is blowing the trees for a page and a half, but this was more than I could handle. I had a general feeling of "can we just MOVE ON already?" Would have been a better Kindle single or at least 150 pages missing from it.That being said, I did finish the book. There was "something" in it to make me want to finish. Decent story overall, but seems familiar and too long.I've read many of Dean Koontz's books, but for the most part this one was not my favorites.

Supernatural Meets Science Fiction
Not up there with his greats, but the best I've read in awhile from him. The middle dragged a little, while the end flew by. It was a little hard to believe how easily the characters adapted in the end.

Not terrible
I am starting to get the impression that Dean Koontz is capable of making even the most mundane things in life interesting. Not that this book is mundane, but some of the more boring details of the book are even made interesting by his writing style. As in a lot of his books, there is an unrealistic premise that is very important to the story. To me, this is what makes it more intriguing since it takes it one step further than your basic thriller novel. However, with all the positives, there are still some annoying flaws in the story. The worst of these being the typical, but unrealistic way the lead female character is written. Koontz seems to make the romantic interest character in the image of the perfect, supportive, brilliant, over competent and beautiful stereotype. I guess if I were reading a romance I would like this, but in these types of stories it just becomes an obstacle to the rest of the story. I would be tempted to skip sections of the book just to get past it, but would end up reading it to make sure I did not miss something important. And in this particular story, he takes this character a step further into goofiness. Without any more explanation than that she had taken a little training, the psychologist wife of the main character turns out to be G.I. Jane as well. Somehow she is not only all that is listed above, but also pretty freaking tactical and proficient when it comes to firearms usage. She approaches situations with the knowhow and ability of a Navy Seal, and pretty much was the protector of he family. Realistically, simply using a shotgun can be very difficult and unnerving for anyone who does not shoot them a lot, yet she handles it like Rambo despite the huge difference in size and experience. But if you can turn a blind eye to that, it is overall pretty good and does have a bit of a surprise at the end.

interesting concept!
I am a big fan of Dean Koontz's work. This book has an interesting concept, and he does a good job building suspense. Like almost all of Koontz's work, the good guys ultimately win, and the evil doers get theirs in the end......with just a little ambiguity to keep all options open. The characters are easy to relate to, if a little formulaic- family man, strong wife, adorable kids, really evil bad guys. But the reason he keeps using the formula is that it works. Not his absolute best work, but still a good read!

Fast paced sci-fi thriller
Excellent read, read in two sittings it was so engrossing. As usual Koonzt gives you metaphysical and eco/politics to chew over whilst tearing through a pact thriller. Always managed to expand your mind with questions for the times

Another fantastically imagined novel from Koontz.
The depth of characterisation is what makes Koontz such an addictive read. His optimism in times of darkness is refreshing, a balm for any reader.

Koonz is my go to holiday read - never a bad one. I also like dogs which helps and believe good over evil every time. Another winner but took a couple of holidays as I got distracted somehow.
