I use small pieces of card stock (thicker than plain paper) to shim around 4 sides anmd it works great so have no good reason to upgrade as of yet. Don't know your answer.

Can this be re-gripped with a real golf grip?

Yes. Though the metal shaft is slightly thinner than a standard golf shaft so we advise using more layers of tape than you normally would
