incredible!
I stumbled upon this book as I was looking for alternatives to the anti-acid medication I was taking (Ranitidine)that was giving me such bad gas that I was doubled over in pain. This journey started over year ago when I began having an unexplained chronic cough. My doctor naturally thought it was allergies and the post nasal drip was causing the cough. I never really had allergies before but I trusted that the doctor knew what he was doing. I took the allergy medication for two months with no improvement. I tried acupuncture, eliminating dairy, wheat and gluten to no avail. At this point, I was coughing every few minutes and my life was revolving around how to get rid of this cough. My cough had gotten so bad that I couldn't eat anything salty or crunch without almost gagging. My esophagus was so irritated that I was having a hard time swallowing my food. In desperation, I went back to my doctor and insisted that he listen to my symptoms and do some testing. One of the possibilities he came up with was that I might have GERD (I had never heard of it) and that my cough might be related to stomach acid. He prescribed Ranitidine and within a few day my cough stopped. I had also modified my diet; no chocolate, limit coffee and alcohol and no soda. I also ate smaller, more frequent meals. I was so happy to no longer be coughing that I put up with the gas and bloating that the medication caused. For over five months, I was cough-free and so relieved! Every now and then my cough would start up again so I doubled up on the medications and it went away.I didn't like the idea of being on this medicine forever, so I gradually weaned myself off of it. For three months, I was able to control my cough with being very careful about what I ate and drank. However, two weeks ago, I over did it. I ate pizza and drank more that I should have. I started coughing again. I went back on the Ranitidine but the cough did not stop. After two days of being on the medicine, I was literally doubled over in pain from boating and gas. In desperation, I went online to do some research and that is when I found this book.I had no idea that low stomach acid could cause GERD. I read the book reviews from the other people and decided to buy this book. As I waited for it to arrive, I did some more research, and found many common themes all of which supported the ideas in this book. I immediately stopped taking the Ranitidine and went to the health food store and bought some Betaine HCL with pepsin.I have been taking the Betaine with every meal for the last week, and I the coughing has disappeared. I also feel more alert and energetic. I have terrible athletes feet and they are looking much better since I started taking the Betaine HCL.This book opened my eyes to the very damaging effects of antacids. The doctors in this book do a very thorough and detailed job of explaining the importance of having enough stomach acid in your system. This book is very important and the book reviews have been helpful as well.

Essential Information
I work with people on gut health, and this book explains the essential nature of HCl. It focuses on how HCl impacts the health of various body systems and its relationship to symptom presentation. I have utilized a lot of data from this book in my practice. It is a worthwhile read.

So much information!
This book was recommended to me by my nutritionist. I have had digestion issues among other health concerns for 40 years. Now one autoimmune disease after another is being added to my diagnoses. I am taking 13 prescriptions without having any improvement. This book makes so much sense! It is written in lay terms so it's easy to understand, but the author doesn't talk down to you.The websites provided led me to a Doctor in my area that I am looking forward to working with.I highly recommend this book. If you are ready to take your well-being into your own hands and find a solution that will actually work, this is the place to start!May God bless you on your journey to better health!

Heartburn and Childhood Asthma Cure!
I have had asthma since I was 3 years old, and started getting acid reflux symptoms when I was about 15 or so (I'm 30 now). I got fed up with taking both advair and whatever heartburn med I was on at the time (most recently, prevacid). The meds worked, but I was worried about long term side effects, so I bought this book. He suggests increasing your stomach acid to reduce heartburn symptoms (counter intuitive, I know, but brilliant) and argues why turning off your acid production is a bad solution. He also talks about the link between gerd and childhood asthma. Anyway, one of the first recommendations he makes on how to treat yourself is bitters. I bought nature made swedish bitters, and it worked wonders. I never had to progress to his later recommendation of HCL. If the bitters work, then he seems to prefer that option. I've quit prevacid cold turkey before and after a few days had a lot of heartburn pain/burping/hiccups and waking up in the middle of the night. This time, I quit cold turkey, but also added bitters into the mix. The heartburn totally went away. I even went to france right after and ate lots of cheese and drank coffee, along with all sorts of other bad habits (drinking and eating right before bed, anyone?). The other good news is that I am off my asthma meds too, and symptom free! Even when I exercise, and play with my two cats - things that used to cause attacks for me. I think bitters is a huge part of my success in quitting medication. I also take vitamin B vitamins, as part of an asthma treatment. I dont have to take bitters all the time anymore, maybe once every couple days if I feel a relapse coming on (relapses might never happen if I could manage to quit coffee!) It ends up being cheaper, and in my opinion, healthier, than the pharmaceutical options. I never get heartburn anymore. But I can tell if I haven't been taking care of myself - so that's when I take the bitters and the heartburn never happens.I am so grateful to this book for walking me through the process of how to cure myself. It was worth every penny. Having been to asthma doctors and regular doctors, it was shocking to me that I never knew about the link between gerd and asthma before - and why no doctors ever brought it up! If you have both, this book is definitely for you. My only critique of the book is that he is very vague on the link between why a higher amount of stomach acid will reduce your symptoms. He mostly talks about why stomach acid is good for your body as a whole, and then states vaguely that the link between the the LES muscle, heartburn and stomach acid is unclear. Whatever. It worked for me!Good luck!

Why wasn't this book edited before or since publishing?
Oh my. I paid full price for this book (Dec/2020). Although it contains some helpful info, I don't understand why it has never been updated/edited. Not only does it have numerous typos, but the really frustrating part is that you can be reading something and suddenly the info just stops and you wonder where the rest of the info is. Sometimes you find it continued on another page, but you have to hunt for it. Sad, that after all the time Dr. Wright invested in writing it, that no one bothered to edit it. Look for a used version for a cheaper price if you really want to read it.

Highly Recommended.
Know anyone on antacids or acid blocking meds? Required reading ! Know anyone considering bariatric surgery ? Read this first ! With all the current emphasis on the gut bacteria microbiome perhaps it only makes sense to examine the first stop in the gut express. As usualBig Pharma treats the symptoms while ignoring the cause , and at what long term price. Your stomach is specially designed to be full of very strong acid. When people surpress this activity long term there are health ramifications. How can you absorb proper nutrition when the process is stifledfrom the get-go ? A very readable explanation of whats going on , and how to care for and correct it. Highly recommended.

Very informative
Information on the book is very useful and clarified many misconceptions about stomach acid, gastritis, acid reflux, heartburn, etc. Briefly explains different approaches to heal these diseases on your own or when to look for help. Now, the editing of the book is quite poor, there are several obvious misprints like "Turns" instead of "Tums" throughout the entire book, and at times the text is extremely repetitive, it is rare to go through a single page that does not mention how the drugs industry makes billions with antacids. All in all, the information here is very helpful for those who suffer from these diseases and can enlighten you to seek alternative ways to cure them from their root causes and stop the antacids and acid blockers madness.
