Entirely too clear author did not like Ms Neel
A good biographer can almost effectively conceal their hero worship or contempt for subject- if the writer is good If the writer is Very good- they can feel both & conceal both! While Mme Neel very well cd have - and probably did - embellish history &/blurred aspects of her life - her singular accomplishments -& her rare rich personality can’t be deniedHow much more witty the book could have been- if author had ‘played’ w Neel’s eccentricities- in a human way- rather than trying to present her as a quasi-fraud in black and white terms In fact, aren’t colorful heroes more interesting because of their individuality ? There was a tart, thin-lipped pickiness to describing Neels breakthroughs & life that felt zealous, petty and personal
