Excellent
The Martyr, second book in The Covenant of Steel trilogy, is fantastic! The actions of battles and personal confrontations along with the intrigues of the religious sects and royal court make for a exciting, fast paced story. While swept along with the anointed lady's crusade, Alwyn learns the origins of The Book and is told a truth he tries to deny. It's an excellent read!

Covenant of Steel
Book 2,The Martyr of the Covenant of Steel trilogy it wasn't book one, but it was still an all-around great second book. The pace wasn't as fast as the first book but still pretty close. I'm really am impressed with Anthony Ryan's writing it never gets boring to me he's one of the authors that no matter what I automatically buy his books when they come out, this one is no different. If you read book one you know about the characters and what you're going to get the main protagonist is getting more brutal as it goes and we all know how smart the guy is all,the side characters are well developed also there's really not anything to say bad about this book except there was some info dumping towards the middle. As for the action and the combat in this book, it's visceral just like all Anthony Ryan combat scenes and action scenes, one of the best in the business. Still, all in all, a solid four star book, and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

A fantastic ride with a Martyr and a Scribe!!
Once again, Anthony Ryan has written a wonderfully dark story with some wonderful twists and turns along the way. I have enjoyed this story thoroughly and look forward to reading The Traitor to see where he leads us next. WONDERFUL and highly recommended.

Great read, characters engaging
Thank you for this second installment of The Covenant of Steel. I believe it was as good or better than the first one. Off to #3.

Sadly, he's no KJ Parker.
Like the late Iain Banks, who ruined SF for me, KJ Parker did the same for fantasy.Ryan is passable enough, but not nearly as compelling.

FUN AND WELL WRITTEN
ANTHONY RYAN IS SIMPLY THE BEST OUT THERE. WELL WRITTEN STORIES THAT CATER TO ADULTS. NOTHING IS OVERLY SIMPLIFIED OR GEARED TO THE YOUNG ADULT. COMPLEX STORIES, CHARACTERS AND ADULT WRITTING STYLE. ALSO A FUN READ! I'VE READ ALL OF HIS BOOKS AND HE'S THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE THAT I KNOW OF(EXCEPT GUY GAVRIEL KAY) WHO WRITES INTRIGUING, FUN AND COMPLEX STORIES. OTHER AUTHORS ARE FUN READS, BUT ANTHONY RYAN IS THE MOST INCLUSIVE. MANY VARIED CHARACTERS AND STOREY LINES AND THOUGHTFULLY WRITTEN.

Excellent follow-up to a brilliant part 1!
Very interesting main character. Excellent storytelling, not predictable or subscribing to standardized writing tropes. A brilliant, deep and insightful read. I've become a huge fan of Anthony Ryan!

Better and better
The second leg of this vibrant, inventive, wonderfully written fantasy saga deserves all the praise it has already received and much more. I can’t wait for the third and final book….

Captivating, unputdownable masterpiece!
The book uses a much rather antiquated language, contains many sophisticated phrases and may therefore not be penned in a mainstream-like bread-and-butter writing style, I grant, but...You'll not only get accustomed to that wording, but you'll even start to like it and even to think the way the story is written. You will literally and downright emerge in the story and feel the plot as if being part of it.I am a big fan of fantasy and this book really is one of the few which contrives to combine creditability and fiction while pulling off the feat to maintain suspense and excitement from the first page to the last.Like in the first part, there are some striking parallels to the real world in all its struggles, particularly concerning matters of faith and religion as well as politics. As far as I am concerned, I figuratively just stumbled to the book's last page and couldn't believe to have reached its end so soon. As is often the way with ebooks you just don't always pay attention to the amount of pages which are still waiting to be read. But trust me, that wasn't the only reason. I rather swallowed the story whole! If you like medieval stuff, tinged with some fantasy elements and some - but not to much - religious and political intrigue, you'll definitely like the book! Besides, the fighting and battle scenes are really well written! I would rate it as a buy, a must have!
