The Complete Surprise: Knitting Elizabeth Zimmermann's Surprise Jacket Paperback – May 6, 2016

I had only heard about this until I found this book. I read some and proceeded to make the baby sweater....kinda blind. It came out great!! Now I want to make my 2 10 yr-old granddaughters sweaters. It is a fascinating technique!! It is not for a new beginner but not hard either if you just follow the directions.

I've knit the BSJ at least 4 times previously and I've got notes that remind me if how to avoid some pitfalls. The second one went more easily than the first because I knit it right after the first, just in a bigger size. With 3 and 4 I was back to struggling again. Cully's book has already been helpful for #5 currently on the needles. I love the look of his lifted increase. His additional notes improve on Elizabeth's sometimes sparse directions and the pictures are really helpful. Elizabeth was the one to make me the "boss of my own knitting". Cully continues that encouragement. Kudos to him and Schoolhouse Press. Once I get a couple sweater's finished for the upcoming great-niece, I may finally have the courage to tackle the Adult Surprise.

I loved the book. I enjoy a hard copy craft book for reviewing and studying the pattern. I am looking forward to working on the patterns out of the book.

Like Elizabeth Zimmerman books, this is wordy and heavy on theory. It is helpful however if you have the other EZ books to help you with variations to the surprise jacket. It gives you the formula—you need to do the measurements and math. Although it touts itself as being for beginners, I think all but experienced knitters would be frustrated. That said, if you are a fan of EZ, and a confident knitter who is comfortable with their ability to create EZ items, it is a great reference and adjunct to the other EZ books!

After having made about a gazillion Baby Surprise Jackets, it's great to be able to translate to an adult sweater. Easy to follow instructions, extremely detailed explanation of how it works, and why it works. Makes it endlessly customizable!

I love anything and everything EZ. This book is a welcome and useful addition to my collection. It is packed full of helpful information and tips. A fascinating read for any knitter and a real treat for EZ fans. SHP has also published a Surprise Jacket Calculator, available to download from their website, that complements the information in this book. I haven't bought it yet, but I certainly intend to do so soon.

Good book for knitters.

It has been such fun making my first Surprise Sweater and there is so much more information in this lovely book. I look forward to many hours of knitting enjoyment as I work my way through it.

J’aurais aimé avoir pour faire le baby surprise jacket pour un bébé à venir mais elle nous indique comment faire les calculs basés sur la taille réelle du bébé qui n’est pas encore né. J’ai ensuite appris que sur le patron unique sur Ravelry Ces informations y étaient. Donc déception à ce niveau sinon le livre est une mine d’informations quand on peut prendre les mesures de notre sujet qui portera notre tricot.

Il libro per chi ha voglia di imparare tecniche avanzate di maglia ai ferri; tratta principalmente una modalità unica di creare un cardigan, le sue varianti eseguendolo dalla taglia neonato a quella adulto. L'unica pecca è che non sia mai stato tradotto in italiano.

Wichtig vorweg: Um dieses Produkt sinnvoll nutzen zu können, muss man die amerikanische Strickterminologie kennen.Alle Sondermaschen werden im Buch sehr ausführlich bebildert erklärt. Zusätzlich gibt es ein Schal-Projekt, in dem diese Maschen alle zur Abwendung kommen, um vorher zu üben. (Hab ich nicht gemacht, mir haben die Fotos und Maschenbeschreibungen gereicht)Die Ursprungsjacke ist einmal in einer Prosa-Mitlesevariante geschrieben und einmal als Row-by-row-Variante. Ich persönlich kam mit letzter besser klar, hab beides versucht und viel zwischendrin geblättert. Was gut war, denn beide Anleitungen haben ihre Vorteile.Für mich als erfahrene Anfängerin war die Jacke so gut machbar.Das Buch wartet nich mit verschiedenen Variationsanleitungen auf, die ich nicht nachgestrickt habe.Insgesamt ist das Buch gut durchdacht. Besonders die ausführlich bebilderten Anleitungen machen es das Geld wert.Werde die Jacke in Zukunft öfter stricken, wenn das Kind größer wird.

Quite tricky to get my head around this book - made one jacket according to the only set of line-by-line instructions, and then it made sense! The instructions referred back to the details, so it was really straightforward. Made a second little jacked and improved on the first, no stopping me now!
