It will work on wood however I would test a small area for when you remove it it may take off some finish.

We do not recommend using our cat training tape on artificial leather or genuine leather. You can test a small piece in the corner, and after 48 hours, make sure your couch isn't damaged, you can use it again

Q: I can get the first layer off and then adhere to sofa. How do I then get the top layer off??

You have to get between the two layers. I found picking a corner and working with it until I got it to separate was the best. Once you have it started it goes really fast AND you find it easier each time.
