Wonderful, moving story
This book is a great example of the difference a few brave and kind people can make in the face of a humanitarian disaster like Syria. Alaa not only helped the wounded as a volunteer ambulance driver, but rescued and cared for cats, dogs, a chicken, a hawk, monkeys and horses. As well as looking after animals he set up a free clinic for local residents and hosts birthday parties for the local children. His story is deeply moving and well written, a first hand view of the progress of the civil war and how severely it affected ordinary people.I can't recommend this book enough, it's superb.

Amazing
An amazing story of resilience in the face of adversity.Alas is a truly remarkable man and has shown such strength throughout the Syrian war. That he chose to stay to help both injured people and animal's is remarkable in itself but setting u the sanctuary twice after losing so much is just amazing.I have followed the Sanctuaries on Facebook since I first heard about the cat man, but to hear the whole story so far as told by him is amazing. That he has feared for his life more than once is no surprise, but what he has achieved is absolutely astonishing.

The Last Sanctuary in Aleppo
Excellent read from a wonderful caring man who rescues cats (& other animals) and helps children, striving to do his best in an awful situation which is still on-going and extremely dangerous. He is an absolute credit to Syria.
