Thomas and Beulah (Carnegie Mellon Poetry Series)

I was very pleased with this book. It offers a glimpse into the lives of Thomas and Beulah as they navigate through a tough life. It also gives you a nice glimpse into the struggles of those who may not have experienced the finer things or the freedoms that some are offered.

Rita Dove is a beautifully musical poet whose poems often build upon one another to form overarching narratives, yet sit strongly by themselves at the same time. Their sense of rhythm and musicality is fantastic and natural, with no need for overzealous rhyming but excellent diction in their alliteration and assonance. Rita Dove deserves all praise for their work. I highly recommend buying.

I had bought the Tomas and Beulah for my English: Intro to Poetry and it came like the next day! Such fast delivery! I even got another one for a friend because we're in the same class.

This is a major achievement by one of America's finest poets. It has been characterized as a story of an African-American family, but it is much more than that, it is the unfolding of the human heart like a bright poppy into a full bloom and then the sad falling away of the petals. I have regularly returned to this book, and always find it rewarding.

This is a good read. Two stories told by both the husband and wife, their versions of life together and apart.

Unforgettable.
