Concept is great, execution is lacking.
7/14/15I bought this in May of 2014 to keep the raccoons and deer out of our vegetable garden. Assembly was quite simple and, following the enclosed instructions, it was charged and ready to go in under two days.I filled the water tank, adjusted the sensitivity and it worked great - it was detecting animals - right down to squirrels - up to 20 feet away, perfect! For the rest of the summer, all I did was keep the tank full of water and, while my neighbor was watching his garden become a buffet, we had home grown vegetables all season. At the end of the growing season, I drained the water tank, wiped the outside of the sprayer off and stored it in the basement. This May (2015) I brought the sprayer out and set it out to charge. After five days it was still non-operational so I called Woodstream (two year warranty). The person I spoke with had me run through a couple of tests and said OK, he would email me a return label for mine and they would replace the sprayer. I got the label, packed mine up and took it to UPS the same day and a week later had the new one.Set up the new one, charged it and tried to set the sensitivity - no go. No matter how it was adjusted it would only detect me at a maximum of five feet. The garden's over twenty feet, this isn't going to work. Futzed with the sprayer for a couple of days to no avail, so I put in another call to Woodstream and spoke to another pleasant rep, Had a little difficulty explaining that, while the sprayer worked, it wasn't able to detect anything beyond five feet in front of it. Finally rep said that replacements are warrantied for 30 days so he would send me a return label and we would go through the process once again. Sent the sprayer off the same day and started spraying deer repellent around the garden and keeping my fingers crossed. After ten working days, I called Woodstream once again to see why I hadn't received a replacement sprayer and once again, got a very pleasant rep who told me the one I sent back was being repaired but instead of waiting, she would send out a new one that day.Hmmm, squirrels aren't fazed by deer repellent, they're pulling the cherry tomatoes off of the lower part of the plants and the deer are starting to nibble but haven't chowed down, yet. Switched deer repellent to try to throw them off.The new sprayer arrived, went through the process and...it's the same as the previous one, sensitive to roughly five feet, after that forget it. Fiddled with it for a bit and then it quit spraying altogether - the pump would run but no spray. Took it apart and found the hose had come off of the pump, put it back on with a new clamp and that's where we stand; the sprayer works, but only "sees" anything that's literally right in front of it.While I like the concept - and the first one I had worked great for one summer, I can't see spending $179 for this thing if, at best, there's only a one in three chance of getting a good one - and then it only works for one season. At this point I wish I had kept the first one and tried to replace the battery; all in all a very frustrating buy.

This really works!
My neighborhood is surrounded by open space and I have a severe deer problem. They did an enormous amount of damage to my plants this winter and they treat my summer yard like their own personal gourmet buffet. Though repellant sprays help, the deer still do a lot of damage every summer, so this year I decided to try the Spray Away (though I call them - I have two - DEER CANNONS) and they really work! I got to see them in action one night late when our motion sensor light came on in the backyard. I watched as two deer strolled towards my flower beds and then the cannon went off and the deer BOLTED away. It was awesome! I didn't realize how truly effective they are, though, until this week when I realized that my rose, that usually only has a few blooms, is covered in buds, covered! It's such a thorny rose that I had always assumed the deer wouldn't eat it, but now I see I was wrong. Those bastards have been eating the buds for years and I just didn't realize it. Anyway, there must be 15 buds on the plant right now, and that can only be because the deer cannon is keeping the deer away. I am thrilled! There is significantly less damage across my flower beds and I can't wait to see how many blooms I have this summer, now that the cannons keep the deer away. The cannons do have to be filled every day or two, which is not a problem for me, because I am out watering my flowers already. They also can be set off by cars or even my neighbor mowing. I just make sure to fill them in the afternoon or evening and they have not ever run out overnight.

Works great when it works
Worked great for two months, then battery died. Put in direct sun for a week but still dead. Havaheart says they will replace it. You need a very sunny place to keep this charged and you need to add water every few days. Nice for places where you do not want hoses for the cheaper hose units. Havahart makes the best hose unit.

Almost enough
UPDATE: After having this item go through only one season, and then be stored for most of this winter (Nov 2015-current), the 'low water' warning won't stop blinking, and the sensor isn't working, therefore it will not spray. I'm mad. This is an expensive item, and now I have to report I do NOT like this item. I cannot recommend it like I originally thought.I like this item, though its operation has been a bit confusing. The 30-second 'recalibrating' thing actually takes only about 15 seconds, and we are not warned that recalibrating actually means it will activate and spray water! Also, I'm not so sure that after sweeping one direction (to the right), that it comes back to the left fully? When I test it, it stays to the right in a steady stream, second try. Ran my hand in front of sensor a third time and it comes back towards the left about 1/2 way. So, it is a bit perplexing to me. Still, I've come to retrieve my gizmo the next morning to find it nearly empty, so I'm presuming it is doing its job. Not a perfect solution, tho. Found cat poo yesterday in an area that I've focused on particularly. So, not sure what else I can do but sit up all nite and utilize a bb gun (which I won't do, of course). Our solution: we are installing 'woodstone' rock in this area. Looks like shredded bark, but is actually a lightweight volcanic-type stone. Not cheap, but once and DONE. I hope. . . .

Schade.===Nachtrag!
