Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert

Great tribute concert
This concert demonstrates what a talented singer Freddie Mercury was. It took so many different artistes to cover Queen's songs. And yet no one does it like Freddy.

"There Can Only Be One"
After reading all of the reviews, I decided that in order to get the best perspective on this concert (that I've never seen more than clips of), I had to get both the VHS and the DVD (non blue ray; I don't have a blue ray player). Both arrived yesterday, and I shredded the box open to watch the VHS first. Unfortunately, the video itself was covered in a white mold/mildew: I still had hopes that it would play; tried it on all 4 VCR's in my house but it shut each one down and ejected every time. I was really disappointed, since the CD I bought with this order, "Classic Queen", was also damaged: both are going back. But I STILL had the 3 DVD set, and THAT is what I wrote this review about.Maybe because I'm old and new to Queen/ Freddie mania, I found this set to be unimaginably phenomenal: I literally couldn't stop watching! I was overcome with the palpable outpouring of love from not only the fans, but from everyone on that stage: Freddie Mercury was truly adored, even worshipped, by every single life he touched. At many points I found myself in tears: when Brian May sang about "Too Much Love Will Kill You"; when David Bowie knelt down and recited the Lord's Prayer; when George Michael sang, "Somebody to Love"; the montage sung by Extreme; Elton John with The Show Must Go On"; let's just say that it was all extremely emotionally overwhelming for me, in a good way. As I'm getting to know Freddie Mercury and Queen over the past year through many, many purchases of their music in various forms, this was the quintessential "must see" performance. THIS is the one that put everything into perspective for me: Freddie Mercury was a beloved, brilliant, one of a kind Superstar. "There Can Only Be One": I get that now.So if there are missing pieces of this concert that could potentially enrich my experience, then tell me and I'll try purchasing a different VHS. Otherwise, ignorance must be bliss because for me, NOTHING could top this.P.S.: I had to come back and add this: last night I watched the whole concert, discs 1 & 2; I just finished watching the documentary on disc 3. THIS is just the icing on this formidable cake! Wow, I can't stop crying, again, in a good but deeply moving way. Everyone should see this, long or shortened version, at least once in your life, whether you're an old Queen fan, new Queen fan, or not a fan at all: it WILL change your life and the way that you live it.

Not great but better than DVD copy.
This needs to be remastered for 4K and the audio needs to be mixed for surround systems. The dvd copy looks awful on our 4K tv so I bought this thinking it would be far superior.. it’s not. The distant angles are blurry and the audio it’s aggravating because you can barely hear the lead vocalists and the surround speakers have some awful reverb added which makes it sound boxy. It’s definitely not worth $25 for such a bad experience on blu ray.

Very pleased with my purchase.
Unlike so many reviewers I was thrilled to have this re-released as I do not own any of the previous releases. I can't see some of the issues others have reported, maybe my eye is not as tuned to the subtle nuances of film? I could not see any of the stuttering or jerkiness that some reviewers have noted. The aerial shots were grainey, but the shots of the entertainers on stage were very nice and just as good as some current concert specials. I was also very pleased that they left it formatted 4:3 and did not stretch it, I don't like when they chop off part of the screen just to make fake wide screen. Was this as sharp as Queen at Montreal or Wembley? No, but as it was a TV special I was not expecting that quality. I think they did a good job of transferring it to the SD Blu-ray. It was nice to have everything on one disk. I can't speak to audio set up as I just use my TV speakers. It really is probably more like 4 1/2 stars as some of the clips from old music videos were somewhat grainey and they aren't that way on my video collections. Overall I am pleased with this disk and happy with my purchase. I do wish that there were not so many negative reviews based soley on the re-release aspect and not on the disk itself, If I were not the type to read the reviews I would have missed out on a very nice release.

Outstanding
An absolutely awesome tribute concert to Freddie Mercury. Brian May was at his best as MC, singing, playing piano and of course guitar. His performance on the night did Freddie proud. The first public performance of Too Much Love Will Kill You had Wembley stadium riveted, you could hear a pin drop as Brian sang this song and accompanied himself on piano. The guests performing with Roger, Brian and John were supportive and spectacular in their own rite. Gary Cherone from Extreme stole the show with his rendition of Hammer to Fall. It was also wonderful to have members of Mott the Hoople (the first band Queen toured wit) on stage with Queen. The show was totally Queen spectacular with a magnificent stage and lighting. Would have loved to have been there but this is the next best thing. If you're a Queen fan this 3-DVD set is a must as a collector's item.Sound quality was great and my regular DVD version was wonderfully clear visually.

Great video of a Tribute Concert
This DVD is a great way to relive the concert to honor Freddie Mercury and raise awareness of AIDS. The one concern is that the lead act on the DVD is Metallica, some people may not consider that band to be very "Musical". Other acts are much more musical, the musical range of Queen is demonstrated through the various acts. A lot of effort was put into the show and it shows. Apparently the concert also featured performances by David Bowie and George Michael, among others. It is a good way to look back on that concert and the music that was performed.

Excellent show!
Let's clear a couple of things up. This is a "Standard Defintion Blu Ray" it says so on the front cover. This was shot on video in the early 90's so don't expect it to look like something filmed now. Second, it has bars down the sides. Why? Because that was the shape of a TV screen in the 1990's. Third, you are correct this is not the full days concert. That does suck but a lot of times when a band does not like their performance they will not give the rights (Like Led Zeppelin and Santana did for the Live Aid release). All that being said it is totally worth the twenty bucks. I have heard this pointed out before but if you want to know how good a singer Freddie was watch all these rock gods trying to sing his parts. Except for a couple they really can't do it. But the concert was for a great cause (sorry if you are one of those people who thinks only ethically corrupt people get Aids. If that's the case you should look at your own ethics). John, Roger and Brian are at the top of their game. So is Tonni Iomme (watch him and may when the lead singer of extreme is on. You can tell they are getting a good laugh out of his performance). This is by far one of the better charity events from the 80's/90's. So check it out. I just have one question where are the rock stars and rap stars now that do all this charity? But I guess now a days it's about the sizzle and not the steak. it sad considering most of these people came from working class families.

Greatest band ever!!
In my opinion Freddie Mercury lived an acceptable lifestyle as we see it today and his life was all in his music. Also Brian May sure is champion guitar player. When this type of music came out back then I was very much a Country music fan and disliked rock. Now at 74 I'm into rock such as Queen and Metallica*lol

Not what I expected
I ordered this the moment I heard it was coming available. After waiting 3 months for the delayed shipment to arrive I was jumping at the bit to finally watch it.Sadly, it is still not the entire concert and is missing loads of the added features that were played of Freddie Mercury between the acts. Those acts that did make it into the Blu-ray did not even get shown in their entirety and what's more is the editing between is not even clean. (EG: Extreme sets up chairs to sing "More Than Words", then is shown walking off stage).Great collection for a great cause, but still not what was advertised.
