If you have lower back problems, just buy it!
I don’t usually write reviews, but I’m doing this one to help others. I have a myriad of back problems including scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, and flat back. It has gotten so bad if I stand for any length of time, the pain running down the back of my leg is excruciating. It seems I can’t sleep in a bed anymore because the pain and stiffness in the morning is unbearable. I have a Tempurpedic which I don’t recommend. I’ve tried various other beds and nope. I haven’t tried everything out there, but not super excited to spend $5K plus on a new bed. While searching for chair supports, I ran into this. Seemed kinda speedy for foam, but I was desperate. It has been worth every penny. I use the zero gravity set up to sleep and while I still have a bit of pain in the morning, it’s NOTHING like sleeping in a bed. I can actually stand up without much pain in the morning. It takes all of the pressure off my lower back. My bad has a chance to unclench and actually relax and rest. I also use a memory foam lumbar support cushion because the lumbar bump on the Backmax isn’t much and the extra support cushion really helps. I am a 6’ tall, about 175 lbs, woman. I bought the 28” and while my shoulders fit, they lay flat on the back piece which causes me dull pain. I use bed pillows on both sides to support my arms which is much better. I wish there were zipper-on arms. Speaking of which…spend the extra money…you want this one with zippers. I don’t see how separate pieces would work. I’m sure they’d come apart, plus, in my sleep I’d probably push them away and turn on my side. I am so comfortable on this that I don’t move around and it keeps me from being able to turn over anyway. I tried using the system on top of my bed, but I found it lost support. I keep it on the floor with a rug underneath. When you first sit down you’ll feel the hard floor under your behind, but once you lie back you kind of lift up and don’t feel the floor nor any weight on your behind. It’s awkward to to get off of it because of the shape, so you may struggle a little bit if you have limited mobility getting up off the ground. I sort of flip/roll off to the side, get to my knees then up from there. While I am plenty comfortable on this without a pillow and sometimes prefer that, it comes with an extra, softer neck pillow which isn’t bad. I tried a contour pillow, but due to the angle and firmness of the back cushion, it pushed my head up too much. As far as length goes, at 6 feet with a 34 inch inseam, with the expandable section between the the back and knee piece, I just make it. I’m too tall for using the foot cushion flipped forward, so I fold it back on the knee section and my feet are at the end without hanging off. You could just remove that part, but I don’t find it comfortable with my feet down and I think it takes away from the zero gravity. I think that if you are shorter than maybe 5’5, the proportions might be too long, and if you have an inseam longer than 34”, possibly too short, but I’d suggest trying it. As I write this, I’m visiting my mother. I ordered a second Backmax for her house, but, unfortunately, it didn’t arrive until the second day. I spent the night in the guest bed and all I can say is thank God I ordered the second one and it got here! If you are in pain and struggle to sleep because you need more lower back support and keep your spine straight, buy this thing!!!! The $250 is pennies compared to the relief I feel. Best wishes that you feel better!

Magical: after abdominal surgery and double mastectomy
I don’t know where to begin with the BackMax Body wedge system. There are 4 pieces in this set. Half-Roll Pillow Back & Torso Wedge Knee & Leg Wedge Foot Rest You can use them individually or zip them up to make 1 big piece. There are so many different configurations depending on what you need. I had abdominal surgery and double mastectomy with reconstruction. A 12 hour surgery and came home 5 days later. The first night I could not sleep! I was so tired but no longer had the hospital bed. Trying to lay my legs flat pulled the stitches in my abdomen. I also couldn’t get the right support I needed behind my back and head. I was a miserable, crying mess. So I started looking. I found all different kinds of body wedges available on Amazon. The one I liked was the most expensive one- of course- this one. It wasn’t a whole lot more but I wanted to know is it worth an extra $50. The BackMax was a bit more than most sets. The reviews said it was worth it. The other thing I wanted was to make sure my arms could lay comfortably next to me. I didn’t want to end up on this narrow body wedge that I kept sliding off to the left or right. I loved that instead of the standard 20” I could buy a big roomy 28“. No doubt my arms would be fine. Let me tell you. It looked to be exactly what I needed. I was lucky and was able to get one the next day. I didn’t realize there were 9 different ways I could configure these wedges. I was so excited when it arrived. As soon as I got it I configured it to keep me in the “taco” position. This makes the lowest spot your bottom and doesn’t force you to stretch your body straight. It gives you support and keeps your legs and feet elevated. It places your body in a 120˚ angle – the most relaxed position for your heart, body, and nervous system. The Back & Torso Wedge elevates the upper body to ease digestion, snoring, and sinus congestion. The Knee & Leg Wedge reduce stress on lower back and elevate the legs to the approximate level of the heart to aid proper circulation. This set saved me. I was in so much pain. Having the BackMax I was able to sleep comfortably and that made it much easier on me to deal with everything I was going through. Things I really appreciated about the BackMax. So easy to reconfigure even with having to unzip and zip back up, good quality materials. Good quality foam. It’s very light. It did not have any smell at all- no dye or manufacturing smell. The cover is so soft. It is a Sherpa cover. Being in pain and feeling miserable, this set was comfortable and cozy that I looked forwarding to getting back in bed. Bet your wondering if it was worth it? ABSOLUTELY! This was well worth paying a little more for. You need to remember it’s not like they are inflating the price. The extra money is in the product. You’ve got way more product when you increase the width by 8 inches!! This is one of those “you get what you pay for”. If anyone I know has to go through what I went through I am going to tell them before surgery make sure you get you BackMax Pillow Wedges! In the paperwork I saw they have a travel bag. I’ll definitely have to buy that next. You need not hesitate on this purchase I promise you that you will be so glad you made this purchase. I’m glad I read the reviews and picked the BackMax! Thank you for this wonderful product. Nobody wants to have cancer, or wants to have surgery. I’m so appreciative of having the BackMax to help me get through it all!! The BackMax was like having a security blanket when I was a kid. I knew when I was hurting I could go slide into bed onto my BackMax and everything would be alright!!

Difficult to get out of for elderly
I purchased this wedge pillow system right after getting home from having open heart surgery. I had to sleep on my back for 8 weeks in order for my chest bone to heal properly and this system worked very well for that. However, it is a challenge to get in and out of bed when using the pillows but once you are in the sweet spot it is very comfortable. After the 8 week recovery period I only used the back support section occasionally while laying around reading in the afternoons but not at night. About 8 months later I hurt my back and had to stay in bed for a few days and I used the whole pillow system again. I found I could be pain free while in my sweet spot and enjoyed my recovery a little too much. Part of my back injury was that unknowingly I developed a blood clot in my lung and the doctor blamed the pillow system for being too comfortable because I wanted to stay right there and not get out of bed. Now it wasn't the pillows fault but mine. Just be aware that you can get too comfortable with these pillows. Lastly, I am over 6' tall and the pillows had to be unzipped to be long enough for me to use. There are 3 sections that can be zipped together and I wasn't able to be comfortable with them in that position. I was able to use them just fine being unzipped. Also, being that I am a big man I ordered the 28" wide model and it was perfect. We have a queen size mattress and this system takes up half the bed. My wife was not real thrilled with her side but for me it worked great.

This is THE ONE to buy!!
I don’t typically write reviews but I felt like I HAD to for this. This has been my saving grace for after my recent surgery. Great back support, keeps me upright which I had to do, supports my legs and is wide enough (I got the wider one) to keep my arms in a comfortable spot and not fall off the sides. I am almost to week 3 using this and had to sleep on my back this whole time. With no option of side sleeping I would’ve been so uncomfortable and in chronic back pain from lack of support. The foam is cushiony and not too soft or too firm. The fabric over it is very soft. Multiple ways you can use the pillows, the zippers keep them in place without slipping. Had the most restful sleep I needed for recovery. I use the tiny neck pillow for added support sometimes under my lower back or also under my right arm to prop up when using my arm to use my phone or whatever. When I first get in it, it takes a bit to wiggle into the right spot but once I do I’m good. I use a step stool on the side of the bed to get in it because it adds a lot of height. If you are on the fence and can’t decide like I couldn’t on which one to buy, this one is IT!! No odd smell. Yes it’s pricey but it has been worth it for me.

Cured terrible sciatica pain and leg cramps
UPDATE: We have gone FIVE MONTHS without spasms or pain. This has quite literally changed my spouses life. The release of pressure has allowed for healing, and he has been able to play with the kids and be more active resulting in weight loss and better quality of life. A prayer has been answered here. It has not lost firmness and everything has held up well. If this works for you as it did for us.. it could be life changing. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I am sharing our story because I didn’t see many reviews specific to the purpose we bought it for. This was bought for someone who is 6ft, 230 lbs, and 32 years old. He has had sciatica issues for about two years now with little relief. In the past 6-8 months it actually has gotten worse by causing nocturnal leg cramps… I’m not sure if there’s different intensities of leg cramps but these were crippling, and would come anywhere from 2-6 times a night. This strong man would be brought to his knees in tears as I sat and watched helplessly. It was horrible. The lack of sleep would be hard on him, and the cramps were heartbreakingly bad. We had tried everything, pills, therapy, stretches, heat, cold, anything and everything we were told to do. I got so tired of watching this man in pain and decided to do some research of my own. That’s how we ended up here. I chose this unit in hopes of any amount of relief with no real hope it would do much.. but anything to make him comfier would be worth it. At 28” wide this thing is very capable of holding up such a large person. The foam is firm but that’s what’s needed to hold up someone over 200lbs. This unit is comfortable and fits the large size of our guy. (Side note: I am 5’9 but have insanely long legs, it does fit me differently than it fits him with his average sized legs. If you are 6ft and super leggy you may not be comfortable. Similarly, if you are too short I could see this being a nightmare. For the average American between 5’6 and 6’ I’d say is the sweet spot.) Back to the point of this review. We are 5 nights down without one back spasm or leg cramp! This is something that hasn’t happened in 6+ months! My sleepy pain filled shell of a man is back to being the dad and spouse we love and know! He thinks it’s not only because of the inclined position, but because of the wedge that keeps his feet in an upright position. He now sleeps on this thing all night without so much as a peep. It is really nice that it is zipped together and none of the pieces move out of place on him. It’s also worth mentioning that a king size bed is probably best for cosleeping since this thing is so large. In conclusion, it has provided more relief than expected, can hold a large person, and stays in position all night. If you or someone you love is in pain, it’s worth the try. 250$ sounds expensive.. but I’d have paid that to give even just one night of relief from what was happening, and so far we have 5!

Do not buy! You cannot remove the cushions to wash. And no way to contact seller!
I bought this because I have to sleep basically sitting up due to having stage 4 lung cancer. I finally decided to wash the covers today but knew it would be hard to get them back on because the workmanship of that part of That part is awful. They make it next to impossible to take them off and it took me 3hrs to get the top piece back on and I still couldn’t get it to fit properly. I zipped it up cause I had to wait for my bf help. Well the zipper flew rgt off. I could cry. I cannot sleep without this and idk what I’m going to do! Why would they make it next to impossible to first make the covers fit second make it impossible to remove them to wash them. I also have a collapsed hip joint from being in a zero gravity mat like pad hospital bed for months. For all that money I now have foam all bunched up in a cover I cannot get off cause the zipper is zipped but no way to unzip. And the bottom part is even worse. DO NOT BUY

Very firm, made for taller people. Not for shorter (5'4") person with lumbar nerve issues
I have pinched nerves in the L5-L6 region, so I had high hopes for this Contour Backmax Plus, and bought it as soon as it came back in stock. The Plus is 28" wide and takes up half a queen bed. I covered it with a sheet and tried to adjust the leg wedges to fit my body height, but it was too long. Top to bottom: the small half-round pillow is actually very narrow. I didn't use it. The back wedge is very large, high, and firm. The contours made my head cock forward, which was uncomfortable. The zipper sticks out far enough that I could feel it when I laid down, so that was also uncomfortable. I tried tucking it under but of course then pieces may shift a little. The leg wedges are also very firm. And high. They also shifted. Also uncomfortable. The worst part is that the foam is so firm, that my heels didn't sink in, so the rest of my legs were not supported. My legs are too short to dangle my heels off the edge, as one reviewer mentioned. I tried different adjustments for the wedges but nothing helped. I lasted all of 15 minutes in the bed before I could feel a pinched nerve flare up. It took several hours for that pain to subside, so much as I wanted this to work for me, it just didn't. Pros: seems well-made, the covers are good quality and feel soft. Packs together nicely for storage. Mine arrived with a huge tear in the carton, which the delivery person carefully hid by carrying it and delivering it upside down. Fortunately, the plastic package and foam inside was undamaged. None of the wedges had a strong smell, and what faint smell it had was barely noticeable (and I am sensitive to smells). I'll keep trying to find something that works.

Love this set
I’ve used a wedge pillow before, rigged up with other pillows to support my knees, which does not work very well because the pieces separate and move around and weren’t very comfortable. This set solves all my problems. Because it zips together, the shoulder wedge and the knee pillow don’t separate, and I find the contours very comfortable—mulch better than a standard wedge. I don’t adjust the configuration much because I don’t watch tv or do other activities. The standard sleeping configuration is very close to zero gravity, with a pretty good angle of elevation for both knees and upper body. The only downside of this set is adjusting it requires one to get up and, likely, remove it from the bed. I usually do not sleep the whole night on the pillow, and usually remove it from the bed at some point, which would not be ideal if you share a bed with another person, and might militate in favor of the narrower version (I have the wider version). At any rate if you are looking for something that is really comfortable and will help with reflux or hip and back pain, and you are not ready to commit to an adjustable bed base, this is the pillow to get. It is definitely worth the higher price for the comfort and utility.

Size not right.
I think that the product may be ok, but it was too big for my wife and did not help here much.
