Will not fit standard bit holders or tools. why don't they make that more obvious?

They atre made for the older style collated drivers with the extension arm

Is there a reason for the shanks to be spun back round?

There is a sheath toward the tip of the cartridge that helps stabilize the screw as it leaves the plastic strip just before it enters the material. The smooth shank doesn't tear the sheath, although this is only about an inch from the end of the cartridge.
