Copycat Louis Armstrong
He says nothing Louis Armstrong hasn't already said. Bought this after reading a listing on influential trumpet players. Armstrong is the influencer.

braff is magnificent
in this setting. Closer to a big band than he has worked with more recently, and more exciting and flamboyant than in the more intimate context. I am inclined to put When You're Smiling in the same class of unsurpassed trumpet vehicles as Roy Eldridge's Rockin' Chair (with Krupa), Jonah Jones's Jonah Joins the Cab (with Calloway), Billy Butterfield's What's New (with Crosby) and even Concerto for Cootie (Williams with Duke). The rest of the disk is almost as wonderful.
